Migraines

Just wondering how many student's you have with documented migraines?

On my campus I can think of 5 girls that are documented (my daughter included). I have several that are not documented, but you can tell they do not have the run of the mill headache. 3 of my 5 are severe enough it takes them out for days at a time. I have one that is on home bound services due to a headache she has had since November. It just seems like there has been an increase in our numbers here.

My daughter has missed up to 3 days due to a migraine. We have seen the neurologist, chiropractor, prayed and even got he daith piercing last week. I do have to say since she got the piercing, she has not had a headache.

We have a couple every year, some have prn Maxalt here, which seems to help a lot. I used to get them a few days before my period. They would last for 3-4 days and were horrible. RX relieved it, but never got completely rid of it. Thank heavens I'm past all of that mess now!!! :cheeky:

I'll play my Cave Nurse card again and admit I've never heard the term Daith Piercing until today. Thank you ctate. Sweet Petunia has migraines. Maybe I'll suggest she try this...and use a piercing with a little mermaid as the attachment.

Hope that works out for you, er, I mean her.

I've suffered from migraines since I was about 5 years old. I would get 2 or 3 a month, my mom thought I was just being dramatic about how bad they were until the day I was so miserable I couldn't eat my aunt's home made lasagna that I loved. Tried numerous meds over the years, several helped once the migraine started, but nothing would prevent them. That is until I was finally diagnosed with sever sleep apnea a few years ago. Since I got my cpap machine, the only time I've had a migraine since is when I've taken a nap on the couch without it!

I've had migraines (couple really scary situations too - have ended up in the ED a handful of times due to not having any relief from any of my usual go tos). Changing my diet and making sure I get enough sleep has helped reduce the frequency. I have an RX for Imitrex. It will help with my headache, but only if I take it when my headaches start. The problem is that Imitrex makes me horribly nauseous and dizzy. A combination excedrin migraine and peppermint oil makes them tolerable at work (if I don't have that, I'd rather have the headache than take my Imitrex if I'm stuck at work). My coworkers all know I have them, and can tell. My boss can tell when I have one or have had one (say over the weekend before a Monday). That said, I don't wish it on anyone... :(

I have at least 3 with this and I have headache medications for them if they get it again. Thankfully they have been okay.

I was thinking about myself though while reading your posts. When I was in middle school, I used to eat the chili and cheese fries from my school ALL the time. Then one day, I got a MASSIVE headache, I'm guessing a migraine, and when I would go to class, the light would hurt my eyes horribly, I would vomit so much and feel SO tired. I didn't know what caused it, but it would happen each time I would eat lunch and go to class. This happened for a while, and I guess my nurse didn't care because she would send me back to class with the worse headache ever and my teacher advocating me to call my mother. Then one day, I didn't eat the chili cheese fries and I didn't have a headache. I told my mother and she said that I was probably allergic to the chili, so I didn't eat it anymore. I never went to the doctor or anything, but it took YEARS for me to get the nerve to eat chili cheese food, and I came to find out that I'm not allergic to it and I can eat it to my hearts content. I'm guessing I was allergic to the school's chili only, but who knows now.

But now I'm extremely suspicious of kids coming in with headaches or vomiting each of the same time, because then it could be something like mine and hopefully I can help them, instead of pushing them away like my nurse did.

So, glad you can enjoy chili and cheese fries again.

I do try to see if there is a trigger for my headache kiddos and such, but sometimes they are so random, it doesn't make sense. Even for my daughter, we did allergy testing to see if she was allergic to anything that might trigger them. She's not allergic to anything. I try to help in anyway possible for those kiddos, but my ones that come in with a "headache" laughing and talking with others in the office it's difficult to take serious.

OH yeah I get those A LOT! I tend to watch them and talk to them. If they don't want to talk and just sleep, it's obvious they aren't feeling well. Some of them just want to get out of class and talk to me, which is fine but I tell them their education is very important, it may not seem like that now, but in the future you will see this.
