Migraines

Just wondering how many student's you have with documented migraines?

On my campus I can think of 5 girls that are documented (my daughter included). I have several that are not documented, but you can tell they do not have the run of the mill headache. 3 of my 5 are severe enough it takes them out for days at a time. I have one that is on home bound services due to a headache she has had since November. It just seems like there has been an increase in our numbers here.

My daughter has missed up to 3 days due to a migraine. We have seen the neurologist, chiropractor, prayed and even got he daith piercing last week. I do have to say since she got the piercing, she has not had a headache.

Buh, really? The daith piercing helps?

*goes off to research*

I have a few, but the parents in my district are either very private about actual diagnosis, or every kid calls every headache a migraine.

I have very few with an actual diagnosis, but they usually end up going home and out the next day also when one hits.

As for the piercing, I got one a while back, but had to get it removed. Didn't even think about it - but try to put in a stethoscope while having one - hurts like a *&^%&(.

I had a Cyclical Vomiting Syndrome family last year, otherwise, no. CVS was tough to deal with, those students were always out and very little I did kept them in school. It is an anxiety/ abdominal based migraine loop that is hell to break.

I've had about 10 come through my building, with only 2 now. One is a post-concussion syndrome turned migraine diagnosis; she probably misses 2 days a month with migraine complaints now but very few visits to my office for symptoms. My other kiddo gets them rarely, but he'll miss a week or more at a time when one strikes; 2-3 times per school years seem about right and they are worse in the hot months for him.

My younger brother and I both got migraines starting around age 10. I would be down for 3-5 days with nausea/vomiting, flashing lights, pain, ears ringing-it was terrible. My neurologist tried lots of different meds, but nothing decreased the number of headache days and nothing could stop one once it started. Birth control was a last ditch effort and it helped a lot! As an adult, I didn't have a single migraine until I had my Mirena IUD removed and then the migraines sync'd up with my cycle and made me miserable. My brother still gets them on occasion, usually change of weather does it for him and he's down for 5-10 days. He uses the Imitrex nasal spray but says it only works if he uses it at the very first sign of it. In high school, his neurologist had him try Midol when he felt it starting and oddly, it helped more than any prescription med, now he keeps a bottle in his glove box at all times.

So far the piercing has help with my daughter's. I have friends that say it is working for them.

The ones that call a headache a migraine get under my skin. They'll come in and say it is about 5-7 then laugh and cut-up with friends. Even my undocumented ones have a certain look about them and they don't want to talk to anyone.

My daughter says the piercing interferes with her earbuds. Tried desperately to trade me when we went bike riding.

Noticing a LOT more guys with actual migraine DX. btw.

I got a daith piercing myself. January was a year having it. It has helped me SO much! I have only had ONE migraine in the past year, which is amazing! I don't know it it really works or if it's a placebo effect, but I'm happy with my results.

They also make Ear Seeds, which are small seed like bumps on an adhesive pad that can be placed in the same area as the piercing. A friend of mine tried those before committing to the piercing. I'm not always a big believer in Acupuncture, but when it comes to migraines, I'd try anything!

I'll play my Cave Nurse card again and admit I've never heard the term Daith Piercing until today. Thank you ctate. Sweet Petunia has migraines. Maybe I'll suggest she try this...and use a piercing with a little mermaid as the attachment.

I had never been into a tattoo parlor (was clean and he used gloves) until we decided to get this for my daughter. Some will do a hoop type, but my daughters is just a rod for now. She has not had any major issues so far. And remains headache free.

That's great! I tried to talk my MIL into getting her's done because her migraine are short lived but frequent, however she thinks a 50y/o grandma shouldn't be getting piercings.
