I am starting an 8-week Microbiology class on May 21st. Is anyone else taking Micro this summer? I thought it would be good to start a thread for us to check in occasionally throughout the summer. It might help us stay motivated! :) I have a couple weeks to go before the class starts, but I did buy my books already and am ready to go!
I just finished Micro this past semester (Jan - May) and I just loved it. It was a 16 week, but I give kudos to each and every one of you doing it in an accelerated format. I, personally, would never do that, so good for you.
Micro IS one of my most favorite science classes of all. It really changed the way I thought about cleanliness and has made me more aware of germs and such. Sure, I drive my husband more crazy now, but it's okay!
The best part is learning about how viruses and bacteria get into your system and the method it goes thru getting into your cells. Lab was fun too, and we did some nose and throat samples on blood agar. Did yall know that some of us carry around strep as our normal flora?? Made me think about who I had kissed in the past that carried that organism!!
Our teacher was amazing and only tested from powerpoints. She told us specifically what would be on the test and gave lotts of extra credit. Our final was NOT comprehensive and was only on organisms and diseases, so a lot of flash cards for that, but I learned a lot! I ended with an A, so I was very happy!
Good luck to all of you! This class has a lot of information, so study daily!!H

Best of luck!
So...I started class last week! It is so hectic bc I have to go 4 days of the week, and work in between, as well as deal with my kiddos. This will be a long semester for me lol! I think I am going to like my teacher and so far the material is relatively interesting. I have never had above a C in any of my science classes (I took the others when I was young and not so motivated!!!) so I really want to try my best to get an A!. He said he doesn't give us a review/study guide or anything for the tests, and that we just better know it all! That scared me so I have been studying everything! We have to print out our notes and then he goes over them in class. But there is so much in the book that he Doesn't go over.... I am a little rusty on my studying so I hope I can pull this off;) good luck everyone, I can't wait to get that first test behind me!!
Getting ready to start week 2 of 8 tomorrow! I am enjoying the day off we got today, and it's really helping me catch up a little on reading. Our labs so far have consisted of standard and gram staining, which was pretty fun! Our first test is on June 4th and will probably be on 4 or 5 chapters. I'm really loving my professor so far and I think I'm going to learn a lot! Good luck to everyone this week! :-)
Just checking in....I had my first test last week (on 5 chapters! EEK!). I came home and cried because I thought I failed it!!! I managed to make and 80, but it was shear luck. I must have done some good guessing because there was so much I didn't know. And we had several discussion questions, a few which I knew all about, but my mind went blank and I only got partial credit on some of them!! I studied a lot from the book, but I now know to just stick to the handouts and let that be it. I am having a hard time memorizing all this stuff. We just started on operons, and will then go to viruses. How are you guys studying? What helps you the most?? Any advice is appreciated! Hope you are all doing great! Thanks:)
I loved this class - I am taking my micro final tomorrow. My class was specifically tailored to the healthcare field and it provided great insight into lots of different aspects - patient treatment, cleaning/disinfectants, antibiotic resistance etc.
Study lots and good luck to those of you taking it this summer :-)
I've only been through 1 week of it so far, and can say it's going to be a rough summer. I have spent at least 3-6 hrs a day trying to understand and remember everything. I'm curious to see how poorly I will do on the exams. Our class was told that the exams are strictly comprehensive/ short essay form. UGH, my weakness. I may understand a concept, but not sure I would be able to do essay form, but we shall see. From past experiences for studying, I find writing stuff out over & and over to be helpful, as well as reading it outloud. If you have someone to study with that is beneficial, but I haven't really had that luck. I'm just hoping I can come out of this class with at least a C(even though it would cause me to lose my 4.0). It is a really neat class, just too much to take in in such a short time.
Goodluck
Week 4 starts tomorrow, which means I'm almost halfway done! I had my first test last week and managed to get a 97 after a 10-point curve (I really am loving this teacher, ha). The content is really interesting, but I'm starting to get a little burned out. I'm hoping they next 5 weeks will fly by. Everyone hang in there! It'll be over before we know it! :-)

FIRST DAY OF MICRO --
What a lot to cover. We covered the entire first chapter and I don't have the money yet to even get the book. Cool thing is the professor prints off powerpoints and brings them to class for all the students! WAY cool... we will have either 3 or 4 exams and a final, along with 2 lab practicals! I actually enjoys learning all about the classifications (fungi, bacteria, helminths aka worms, etc.) as well as details about different types of worms, their scientific names, and crude pictures.
Lemme know how all of you do at the start of this summer in the dreaded micro. class!
