Published

Just wanted to Start a study group for spring semester .I thought it will also be fun to give pop questions for us to make up from our classes and answer to help us learn more. Hope to hear from u guys

Well we got our first lab results back last week and i have to write a lab report on it.

My results are all messed up. Im very frustrated right now.

I havent really looked at the lab results until I got home. We did a Effectiveness of hand wash experiment. Our results of the antibacterial hand wash had more bacteria present on the plate than the regular hand wash (had less bacteria).

I have no idea how to write up my report with contaminated results.:hdvwl:

Anyone have any ideas?

I think the best thing to do is write up the results you observed and then explain that you know they are wrong/contaminated b/c xyz should have happened. Maybe even adding in a part explaining how the contamination could have happened would help too.

to be honest with you , we did our best not to contaminate it, so I really have no clue as to how it happened.:(

But I will talk to my prof wed night during break.

This result isn't that unusual. The soap helps in removing contaminants by 'corralling' the oily dirt molecules in a lipid vesicle thereby allowing them to lose their adhesive properties and enabling them to be flushed away. The soap with the antibacterial property apparently was not as effective in carrying this out as was the regular soap that was utilized. (This may have been due to the temperature or softness of the water used.)

The results that we obtained during this test showed no difference whatsoever between unwashed hands and antibacterial soap use! (Cold water only was available at the lab sink, so lipid fluidity was severely impaired)

I am totally having to cram for this test and I am NOT a crammer. 8 AM tests are the worst!

Well, everyone, I dropped my class after I found out I'm pregnant. The teacher and the lab safety section got me paranoid about remaining in the class. So, lab will have to wait until next spring. In the meantime, I'll be reading my micro book and dropping in to read the topics. Good luck to everyone this semester!!!

Sorry to hear that you had to drop out, but you'll be even more prepared the next time you take it! Are you still going to take any other classes while you are pregnant? I spent the last fall in my third trimester but I was so glad I didn't take anytime off. So many of my classmates thought it was amazing that I was there, but really it is so much easier then than after the baby is born. That's when it gets tough (but still competely do-able!!!)

That was my dilemma before dropping out of the class....I didn't want to take time off. I'm hoping to take a class during the summer. Hopefully, the junior college near home will still have it's accreditation by then! Wow--what classes did you take during your last trimester? I was wondering if it was even possible for me to do because my estimated due date will be right smack in the middle of the fall semester.

Just took my first Microbiology exam #1 earlier today (Tues morning 17th) and am finally back at home after midnight off of work - it's been a long tiring day

I think I did alright on it probably mid 80's percent - one of the harder exams I've had to take and the first one is usually the easiest. Will have to stay on top of this. My study tactics include downloading the instructor's powerpoint slides and reviewing them, plus he gives us handouts which I make notes of his lectures in the margins, he doesn't require a textbook but I got one anyway off of Amazon.com and read the pertinent chapters as we cover them. I also answer questions in an MS word file that I print out for reviewing. I'm glad I've already got basic BIO and both A&P's out of the way - can't imagine taking this class concurrently with either of those

I will keep tabs on this thread and try to help anyone out who may need it - sometimes that's the best way to reinforce what you've been taught. I need to brush up on all the different types of bacteria and viruses, their genus and species names, aerobic or anaerobic, cocci vs bacilli, gram + or -, etc etc

Okay, I am STUMPED on this question. Can anyone explain to me why streptococcus grows slowly? Thanks!

Ok I'm joining this group too! My first exam is this coming Wednesday over Micro History, Lab Tools, Prokaryotes, Microbial growth & Microbial Metabolism. 100 questions in 75 mins. Should be a doozy!

I'm having my second micro exam on Feb 26, it's on microbial control & microbial metabolism. What key info should I concentrate on? I want to join this grp as well.

Good luck to all those who are taking their exams.
