Hi ya'll! Anybody taking Micro this coming fall semester and want to form a study group? I did this for A&P I and II and it helped tremendously! I'm taking it along with Chem 1151 (Survey of Chem). Thanks!
I've been told the same thing as Stacygirl...as you increase your magnification, your field of view gets smaller. You may only be able to see 100 bacteria as opposed to thousands and thousands on a scanner lens (although I doubt you could actually see any bacteria on a scanner lens, they would still technically be there and there would be more of them in the field of view). Not sure about the physical size question...it doesn't actually change, they just look bigger the more they are magnified. Hope that helps!
Yep. The same thing happens with telescopes. When you have a lower-power telescope (or high-power binoculars), you are looking at a big chunk of the sky. But when you look through a high-power telescope, you only see a teensy portion of the sky. In both cases (microscope and telescope), that's why you have to know where you're aiming. :)
I wanted to post one other website for those of you who are NOT using the Cowan microbiology textbook. The publisher has made the site open-access, so you can go to it and do the quizzes and look at the animations, even if you haven't bought the Cowan book. Here's the link:

Right on that page it says, "Don't have a registration code? Use this FREE code". Just copy and paste that code after you click on "I am a student" under "Need to register?".
I found the site helpful for reviewing before exams.
our ch 2 is chemistry too. maybe we are using the same book?I HATE chemistry. All i know about covalent bonding is that they share electrons & in ionic bonding one loses & one gains. the reason they dissolve in water is because water is polar & attracts positive and/or negative ions..i think who knows we had a chemistry quiz yesterday..not sure how i did! did yall have to build the little models?
I was worried about this too. I've only taken Inorganic but I noticed that Organic was covered in Chapter 2. My Inorganic Chem teacher touched a little bit on Organic, but not as much as the book covers.
We have our test on Thursday over four chapters. We've only been in class two weeks so this seems fast to me. Question for my study buddies, does anyone know if eukaryotes and prokaryotes use ATP? I know eukaryotes do, just not sure prokaryotes do. And if they don't, then what do they use for energy instead??
Talked to my prof last night about the ATP question we had and he said that ALL living things use it. Lecture was all about microbial metabolism and how bacteria/prokaryotes make ATP.
UGH - does anyone else's class go past the chapters needed for a test before taking the test? We are going to be tested over chapters 1-6 in 2 weeks, but last night we finished up chapter 6 and are moving right along to chapter 7 & 8. This is no good - I'm going to forget the stuff from chapters 1-6!!! Why not go ahead and test us NOW before moving on to the next subjects?
Thats what I miss about high school - you went over 1 chapter, then took a test on that 1 chapter before moving on. Ohhhh the good ole days!

Stacygirl! That is crazy. Six chapters in two weeks? My class doesn't start until the 22nd, and I can't imagine we would be going at that pace...

This website is awesome! I'm trying to review for my first test Monday and it's been a great study tool. Is anyone else using the Nester text (Microbiology: A Human Perspective)?
I took my first micro test on Thursday. It was over four chapters and I studied a LOT for it. The definitions and fill-in questions were a breeze, but there were only a few of them. There weren't any multiple choice questions. The majority of the questions were short answer/essay questions that were critical thinking questions. Those are difficult for me! Does anyone have any pointers on how to study smarter for the next test? Thanks!

Four main functions are carried out on a bacterial plasma membrane:
1) transport, 2) biosynthesis, 3) signaling and 4) the production and use of energy.
I don't have my notes with me but this is what I read and I will double check later.
