Hello All,
I was accepted to Merritt College's ADN program starting Fall/11 and wanted to know who else may be attending. Im really nervous about their program because of all the bad reviews. Is it just a matter of unhappy people are more likely to complain and there are people out there who are happy with the program? If anyone in the program has any advice id surely appreciate it. Thanks!
I just finished the first semester of the LVN program at city college before being accepted at Merritt. They use Taylors fundamentals (as do many a good RN program). I have taken a little time and compared the two books and I can say the information (even the chapter order) is almost exactly the same, yet taylor's is by far a much easier read and is actually about 200 pages thicker. The writers in potters had a very hard time it seems in writing cohesive paragraphs, often the introductory sentences, if there is one at all, do a very poor job summarizing material and the sentences within any paragraph are often loosely tied together with little or no relation to each other (no causal, sequential, or comparative relationship just random groups of carelessly organized thoughts). I have had to train myself to enter a long pause after each sentence to digest it individually.
Just my 2 cents tho
SO, while on the topic of reading...
The students who spoke at orientation gave us the chapters covered for fundamentals, but made no mention of med-surg. Which systems did you cover in the first two terms? I will probably not read too far ahead into the med-surg book but I was thinking of reading a little anatomy review.

Having been in Merritt's RN program, study your Fundamentals!!! This is where most students are dropped...worry about Med-Surg when it comes around second semester. Fundamentals is going to kick your butt and ---- and ------ will not take any prisoners...lol...
Best of luck to you, hope you make it to the end, I on the other hand, am soooooo glad I transfered out of that program!!!!
Hello ALL,I have been reading this blog since being accepted to Merritt's ADN program for Fall 2011 and vowed not to post any comments or messages, but it seems as if this site is helpful in sharing important information regarding the program paperwork, etc.
I have a question and sent an email to the ADN staff but have yet to receive a response. Have any of you gotten your physicals yet... through Kaiser? My insurance is through Kaiser, so I had lab tests done a couple of days ago and am POSITIVE titer for two of the three MMR diseases. Measles I am BORDERLINE, so I understood that I needed to have the vaccine for MMR (again), BUT - do I need to have my blood re-drawn to prove POSITVE titer OR do I prove that I had the vaccine???? Does anyone know? I am asking because everyone at Kaiser seems to believe that I do not need to be re-tested as far as my blood work is concerned and it should be enough to prove that I received the vaccine.
Also, what do we do with our BLS card and all of the information that cannot be loaded into the Certified Background site? Do we hand deliver it to Merritt before August 1? Thank you in advance!
One more thing... I live in Brentwood and am looking to get a small study group of no more than 5 people (anything larger has proven unproductive). I would love to get together and study once the semester starts and continue through the program. I am willing to drive as far as Concord to meet. Please let me know if anyone is interested. Thanks,
I DREAM RN...
When I started the the RN program in 2009 at Merritt, I also showed borderline for one of the three MMR. -------- told me I need to get the MMR injection(s) and just show proof and there was no need for a repeat titer. I do not know if the rules have changed, but I would try and consult with the office ASAP before proceeding on getting your blood drawn again.
Just got a notice that there was a "discrepancy" in my background check. To the best of my knowledge though all my information was correct. I do have a DUI 6 years ago but other than that I should be all clean for major charges. Anyone else get a notice like this? any idea how serious this is?
Chris SN,
No, I haven't received any notices about my background check or anything else. I'm not sure about the seriousness of your situation. Have you tried calling the office to speak with someone about it?
Has anyone heard anything about registration? I have completed all of the requirements for the Aug. 1st deadline but haven't received any information on registration yet. Thank you,
I Dream RN...
I was able to scan two pages and upload them under one heading. For example, I scanned my BLS card on the front as one page and the back as a second page PDF and uploaded it under the proper heading.
The Merritt staff said that registration will be open after Aug. 1st when they are able to determine whose names will be forwarded to the registration office. This is based on what students have completed and passed all of the requirements. I'm so excited to get my nursing career in motion!
