Mercy Hosp. of Pittsburgh

Does anyone know what is going on at Mercy Hosp. of Pittsburgh, all us agency nurses are getting cancelled right and left. Anyone know what is up with them?

I must admit I don't know. Recently I did a post that UPMC is trying to go completely without agency. Maybe Mercy is trying to copy them. It might be the next big money saving fad. They did this in early ninties, I know 'cause I was the one getting canceled in those days. It does not last.

Agency nurses cost mega bucks! They are a "poor" Catholic hospital, and they better get their shit together, or they will end up like St Francis Medical Center....CLOSED!

They have a fountain in the lobby and glass elevators going up the side of bldg. Looks more like a expensive hotel. Oh, I forgot to mention the sculptures.

But those are investments and oh so important to the patient's healing process.....

i recently applied for a position over there, turned it down. They have a rn-bid program where the nurses there are in a bidding war to get overtime. The managers accept the lowest bid(sort of like ebay) They offered me a job substaNTial lower rate than i get 1 hour north of pgh. they also claimed to have a sign on bonus then denied it at the interview.

Guess they spent too much on their budget for fountains and sculptures.

Some one I know recently got a job a Mercy. This person told me Mercy bought a small hospital and then shut it down. Mercy then absorbed all this small hospital's staff. The end result was that they were not hiring, for a little while anyway. I thought, "what is this, a new way to get nurses, buy a little hospital then close it?" It is important to remember this is something someone told me, I don't know for sure.

Well, not exactly. Mercy Providence was a small hospital that the Mercy Health System has owned for awhile. They are restructuring and making that hospital a psyche hospital. As for not hiring....I don't think that's true at all. I work in the ICU there and they are cancelling agency nurses and hiring more full time and part time staff.:nurse:

I work there too, tho I am not a nurse. There is a lot of pressure to eliminate overtime in our department, too.

In addition to Mercy Providence, they also bought up Jeanette Hospital (now called Mercy Jeanette) Could it be that we are a bit overextended??? Medicare reimbursement dropping, too many uninsured critically ill and injured ...we have a Level I trauma center and burn unit and NICU as well. Could it be time to cut out some of those services?

Mercy mission is to serve the poor and underserved. I expect that if we are to survive, we will have to scale back somewhere. I foresee more outsourcing of services...hopefully not my lab, tho!!! :o

Well, I know this is late, but they are/were trying to get rid of a lot of travelers and agency at Mercy. I have a good friend who was a traveler there for years that had to take a staff position, or else she was going to have to leave.

As for working there, I liked it. It was actually one of the better hospitals to work for in the city. I only left because I wanted to work a true Neuro ICU, which they didn't have. Sure there were other reasons, but nothing major.

Take care everyone. Let me know if it's getting any better!
