I start mental health nursing in a week. I will have to find a way to make the material interesting. Has anyone taken this course? If so, can you give me any advice/online resources that may help?

Thanks,

the patients are what will make the material interesting. my last day of psych nursing rotation is tomorrow. it's been amazing.

I second Apgar! I love talking to my patients. Don't be afraid of them. They will teach you so much. I'm pretty sure they benefit me more than I benefit them!

Our Psych clinical rotation was great. If you want topics to review to prepare, I'd suggest:

bipolar, depression, schizophrenia, addiction, psych meds, therapeutic comm., and defense mechanisms.

Thanks! I'm looking forward to the clinical part of the class, but lecture is a different story.

I am not in nursing school, so my comment may not be applicable:

I currently work as a Mental Health Tech and plan to continue through nursing school. I was really nervous about it at first. My mind had all the images from the movies (mostly negative). I have enjoyed every moment over the last three months. Every night is unique and the patients....well, they are never boring :) I said all this to say...I have found that my most "boring/dreaded" lectures become of interest when I have a "case study" to which it can be applied. As I interact with the patients and begin those discussions in lecture, my mind would always be turning over the patient's situation, behavior, etc. (I did this in my MPH program.) I find myself doing it now in A&P. I am not an auditory learner, so having someone in front of me for any extended period of time is difficult for me to bear. If I have application to accompany lecture, it makes the time spent much more bearable.

Lecture was brutal and I am a psych fan. More so I love troubled teens, (minus my own :|).

I just took my mental health lecture final today (thank goodness)!!! I strongly disliked lecture and I even minored in psych in college so this was very unusual for me. The class was boring and I'm hoping that the clinical rotation that begins in a week is much more interesting than the theory class.

I enjoy the lecture. Well, no, I don't. The teacher's voice is too high pitched and it's just a reading of the Power Points. I enjoy reading the book is more appropriate. We get no psych rotations to judge. I'm glad it was a required course.

I did take abnormal psychology, among many others, with my first degree and have been around plenty of addicts and disturbed persons in my career. It's interesting.

The best resource is your textbook.
