At my job, nurses do not do a mental health assessment as shown in the video.
When I do an intake/admission assessment, I focus on medical/nursing concerns. I do a head to toe assessment.
The psychiatric assessment I focus on is limited to: is the patient A&O x 3, are they a danger to themselves or others?, do they have s/sx of side effects r/t psychotropic meds? And I also document their affect/mood.
Psychiatrists do the in depth assessment as shown in the video.
I'm curious as to whether other nurses do a full mental health assessment.

I have always done psychiatric assessments that focus on the here and now. What brings them in today, what are they experiencing, s/s, how is affecting them, and what do they hope to happen by coming into the hospital.
The extensive psychosocial assessment as shown in the video? No.

Where I've worked that sort of assessment was common for the nurses to do, when a patient was admitted. It took forever, but got lots of information. Then the doctor did his assessment too, and so did the social worker. Patients got tired of answering the same questions lots of times...

Ok, I was wondering if those type of assessments are done by nurses. But I see to some extent yes, but not as long.

I don't do the initial assessment, so mine are more informal observations types. I added A&O, mood, affect, thought content, perceptions, memory impairment, harm to self/others, etc, but not in a formal, testing, sit-down type of way. More from talking to the patients throughout the day and watching what's going on.

Our poor patients.......I always warn them when doing their admission interview that they will be asked the same questions three more times (psychiatrist, medical provider, then treatment team as a whole)....then randomly by whoever is in charge for a few days in a row. They get soooooooo annoyed by it. Can't blame them. Others don't mind the Attention.
