Looking for advice from PMHNPs on my work history, and finding work as a new grad PMHNP (particularly telemed)

Published

Wanted to solicit some advice from any of the PMHNPs on this forum. For some background context I am working as an RN in Arizona. I have been working as a psych nurse since I got my license a little over 6 years ago. Prior to that I was a BHT in level 2 group homes for around 7 years, so a little over 13 years total in the mental health field.

Long story short I am feeling burnt out working bedside in mental health. My ultimate goal is to return to school to become a PMHNP, then work telemed from home from that point onward. I am considering stepping away from psych and securing a work from home RN position (non psych related) while I go back to school for my masters. So my question to other psych NPs is this: in terms of finding remote work (work from home specifically) as a new grad PMHNP, would I be shooting myself in the foot to step away from psych right now? Will my 13 years of experience be significantly diminished as a selling point for any potential new job acquisition if there's a multi year gap with non psych nursing being my most current experience? And more generally, how much opportunity is there currently for work from home positions for new grads? Would love to hear your opinions or even similar experiences if you happen to have any you'd be willing to share. Thanks!

Taking a nonpsych RN job while completing your PMHNP is fine.  You can always comment in your cover letter that it was the only job what would work while you were in school.  I don't know what NP pay is in AZ, but just make sure you know what the starting pay is for a PMHNP.  Since you have a fair amount of RN experience, you may take a pay cut for your first PMHNP job.

Also, there are plenty of work from home PMHNP positions for new grad PMHNPs.

Just look at job boards like Indeed, LinkedIn, etc.   Also, one would need the state NP license for other states.  Calif has a lot of openings and they pay well.
