best nursing positions for men.

Nurses Men

Published

Just out of curiousity, for those who are guys, or have friends in nursing that are males what are the most ideal positions (or those guys enjoy most) for male nurses...thoughts, ideas, experiences.. thanks.

Specializes in Trauma ICU, Peds ICU.

The great majority of male nurses I know work in critical care or emergency departments. The areas that seem to be most well liked by the guys I know are those two along with flight and psych. Men seem to be attracted to the technology, high pressure, variety, critical thinking, and autonomy inherent in many of those fields. In my own experience, it's easier as a male to adapt into the unit culture of those specialties because they attract personalities, both male and female, that are most in keeping with many males' default. The unit cultures and personalities I've known in ICU, ED, and to an even greater degree... flight programs is closest to that I experienced in the male dominated profession of fire EMS.

Absolutely! Women obviously hold all of the positions I suggested as well! Well, my point is that the original post was "Just out of curiousity, for those who are guys, or have friends in nursing that are males what are the most ideal positions (or those guys enjoy most) for male nurses...thoughts, ideas, experiences.."

I was sharing my "thoughts, ideas, experiences" Do you have anything to contribute?

I already made my contribution, but didn't see the need to mention any specific specialty as I've seen men thriving in pretty much all areas of nursing.

Specializes in Med Surg, ER, OR.

I also have seen most in critical care, Er or the OR. like others have said these areas attract die to their pace and flow. I myself an an ER nurse and love the pace and flow of the unit. Wouldn't trade it or anything in the world.

Specializes in ICU/CCU.

See what happens when women get involved in the male threads? Pure destruction.

I'm a dude, and I'm in the ICU/CCU. There's no other place for me.

Disclaimer: Women also work in the ICU/CCU and also work as nurses in my hospital, whether stated or unstated. No positions or lack of positions were left in or out whether stated of implied. By "men" the poster was referring to 1) born with X and Y chromosomes 2) born with or acquired a member or memberlike genitals and/or 3) having acquired either 1) and/or 2) at some point during their lifetime.

Specializes in Trauma/ED.

I pay more attention to the female positions at work...he he (had to throw it in there)

Men can do any job in the hospital just like women...is so specific to the person it just depends what you like. I know a guy that worked OB/GYN had 9 kids at home and thrived up there but that would be no job for this ED guy :-)

I would suggest CRNA as one of the, if not the best job for a male nurse. No nursey nurse stuff... no nursing diagnosis garbage... just science.

I also thought the 50Cal was referring to 50BMG. I like mine... BUT in very very small doses.

Mike, hit it. I think autonomy is probably the single biggest factor for men in the workforce especially nursing.

Me for instance, I don't mind being supervised. Everyone has a boss, but I can't stand to be micromanaged and questioned all day. If you hire me to do a job let me do it. If I screw up nail me. If I'm doing good then let me be.

you saying this 'cos it's high paying? those I've talked to who had been put under said most of their CRNAs where women, and that women dominate that field because they are "preferred" to be best in consoling and calming anxious patients about to go through invasive surgeries, diagnostics, e.t.c.

Anecdote does not equal data..... The percentage of males in nursing is IIRC about 12%, The percentage of males in the CRNA profession is close to or over 50%.

Do the math.

As for this... those I've talked to who had been put under said most of their CRNAs where women, and that women dominate that field because they are "preferred" to be best in consoling and calming anxious patients about to go through invasive surgeries, diagnostics, e.t.c...

Not even a close approximation of reality...

Sounds pretty sexist to me. Do you think a male OB/GYN physician is less qualified because of his chromosomal makeup?

As for the money? Yup it's nice ... but is seldom the reason people get into this profession... To most of us.. it is about the responsibility, professional respect and autonomy that every other nursing speciality can only dream of.

to correct my position on this for sake of providing accurate info the ration of females ot males in the CRNA field is 6 to 4. Source is beckersasc.com (Beckers ASC Review). So remifentanil you are absolutely on point :-)

With males making up a mere 6% of the nursing workforce, I'd say we're doing pretty well in this particular nursing specialty with a 6-4 female-male CRNA ratio.

As do many female nurses. What is your point?

The point was to help answer the poster's question, not to slight women in any way.
