MEN IN NURSING

Nursing Students Male Students

Hi, everyone

I have read many negative comments about the experience of male student in nursing schools, and i became little anxious about it. so i want to share my experience with every male nurse, who are in confusion and in debate about this issue. I joined nursing school(BSN) and i found out that there is no stereotyping or discrimination about the male student in the nursing college. Do not give too much attention to the people who said negative things about it. Be confident and join nursing school. Nursing school and education is not about male and female, it is about caring and uncaring person. Moreover, in my class there are about 8 men among 18 students. So do not think that Nursing is only for female only........

I agree with your statement. I am now in my final semester of nursing school and have never come across any stereotyping or discrimination. In many ways I think it has been an advantage to be a male in nursing school.

Yes..i am agree with you. Due to many negative comments about the stereotype and discrimination about male nurse, many men hesitate to attend nursing schools. And we have to support them by sharing our experience of nursing school. "if anyone (does not matter male or female) is caring, then he/she does not have to hesitate by considering nursing school." GOOD LUCK FOR YOUR SCHOOL.

We (the guys) experienced overt discrimination in our program. Not from our instructors or our fellow students but from the staff nurses on the OB floor who seemed to believe that men had no place as nurses anywhere near the birthing suites. The male residents and attendings were not a problem, of course, just the male nursing students.

I'm glad that you've not experienced any of that but don't think that your experience is universal.

speaking as a father of 3 who delivered his 2nd and 3rd children at home independently, i think i am qualified to stand on a L&D floor.

tarang is indian or SE Asian, so is different from US born caucasian males. his entire persona is different, so he will be received differently. obsequious is the word.

A teacher flat out asked me today what I felt about men in delivery and I did what I nomrally do when someone ask an obvious retarded question...I combat sterotypes with debilitating smart ass replies.

Qualified or not, I personally would just assume stay out of OB/Gyn and the nursery. I couldn't care less if I learn that field or not since it's not particularly interesting to me. It wasn't in paramedic school either. That said I've delivered a baby, seen a tubal ligation, seen a c-section, and I've seen a speculum exam. That's enough and more than I want honestly. If I am discriminated against in OB then that's just doing me a favor. Think what you want because I do the same.

That said, I'm one of two males in a 14 student BSN program. I seriously doubt I'll get discriminated against simply because of the numbers. It's really hard not to notice my presence as well so it's not like I can blend in and "hide."

That's super that you had a great experience, but don't come on here and proclaim that such is the case for everyone. That wasn't my experience of nursing school and you'll find no shortage of posts on this board detailing the struggles of male nursing students with discrimination.

I dislike this kind of attitude - a nurse is a generalist, which means that he/she needs to be exposed to the entire field, whether or not it's what they're interested in. Any nursing student, regardless of gender, should have the same opportunities and expectations of them. This means not only providing an environment where the male students can do more than sit in the corner during the OB/Gyn clinical rotation, but also not letting them slide and letting them get away with not doing parts of the OB rotation.

yeah, nursing generally seems to favor the limited males that do decide to enter nursing.

as for ob/gyn, i agree not my favorite thing, but to each their own, i was exposed to it and know there are areas of nursing that i'm better suited for.

Hello Folks. Just wanted to chime in. I am graduating in three months. I encountered no discrimination at all in class or during clinicals. In fact, it was quite the contrary. Many nurses on the floor stated they were happy to have us (men) there. Even in class, the instructors were not as tough or intimidating towards us. Even the females noticed that we were treated just a bit better. My class has 54 students of which a third are male. I received a scholarship from one of the top hospitals here in South Florida. So far, being a male in a female-heavy profession has been incredible for me.I have heard some stories that are quite the opposite of mine. As more men go into this profession, things will change. The scales are tipping.
