I ve worked in hospitals and nursing homes. It sucks. Dont let people here convince you on how great it is. If you are going back to school dont hang onto the mentality of "nursing is a great career there where always be jobs" that was 10 years ago when that was true. do research, there are no nursing jobs. People from overseas come here by the boat and take jobs. The wage is on the down trend, there are more then enough nurses to replace those ready to retire. Please if you are just getting into college pick a less stressful, good paying career choice. PPLEASE research on forums and here from nurses who are not happy with their career. coorprate has destroyed nursing. Dont listen to the few on here who say nursing is so wonderful, i promise you when they run out of paxil and adivan, which is fueling there happiness, they will no longer be posting on these boards on the issues of how great their jobs are.
I don't recommend anyone chooses nursing unless it's a real passion, the whole career thing is great in theory, in the UK I can move anywhere and get a job in most places but it's no longer the job I stated 13 years ago.
I think the question I ask myself is would I recommend my children to take nursing and it would be a resounding no, so why would I do so for other people.
I do still like my job, love it at times, but the future is not bright for this profession.
I think it all depends on where you live. There is a HUGE shortage of RNs and CNAs here where I'm at. We have countless LTC and assisted living facilities, 2 hospitals and a third being built, and numerous clinics. We have a university and a technical college, one offering a BSN, one offering CNA and LPN certification, and ADN. Even with those two, there STILL aren't enough nurses here--and, as I said, that's with another hospital coming.
I worked EMS for many years and just got my licence back. Talk about a thankless job. But, I still love it and I'm looking forward to being an RN.
I know, I know--"You'll see." I'm 42, so I've been around the block. I know that the grass always looks greener on the other side even though the reality is that EVERY job has its own special kind of BS that you deal with--some more than others. I've been a meter-reader, iron worker, and a locomotive engineer for one of the largest railroads in the world. I LOVED one of those jobs and there was STILL lots of BS to deal with and plenty of thanklessness.
Alright--anyway, I'm always sad to see someone stuck in a career they hate so much. Hope you find some way to make it more palatable...
What you are saying about nursing; I have heard MEDICAL DOCTORS say the same about the corporatization of medicine and how they are mules for insurance companies. Doctors now also work alot more for the same pay. You may see them go on vacation frequently, but many doctors leave the clinical setting because of burnout. This situation of stagnant wages is part of the why so many democrates are moving further left, and republicans moving further right. Wages are stagnant, FOR EVERYONE.
We all have to be careful not to fall for the "grass is greener" syndrome.
I know doctors who refuse to send their kids to medical school and the same with nurses, and the same with lawyers.
In the words of Prince Nelson Rogers, "Everybody can't be on top."
Life is hard unless you you come from wealth. That how it is, and how it will be.

No job is perfect, but if you don't like it-get more education or find a different career. The pay is decent and yes it is stressful but no one said it wouldn't be. I hated my first nursing job so I found another one and went to grad school. Buck up. As to the people coming off boats and taking jobs- this is inaccurate for nursing especially and a bad take.
