Meeting AHPRA requirements as a International Trained Nurse from the Philippines

Published

hi guys,

I posted a questions regarding what is the best thing to do for our current situation as this was a life changing decision for us (if ur curious its in p196), thank you very much for those who answered and gave their insight. it looks dim and uncertain but I realized I really have no choice but close my eyes and to push thru with this.

for the benefit of those who might be going our way too, Il explain what we have done and post some questions,

the gf is the nurse w 3 years experience plus a masteral, we are both young and we have a 1 year old but we are not yet married. we have applied for unisa thru idp, we chose unisa altho it has a longer program of 18 weeks and more expensive than the iron program, we believe it is the faster way to go since you do not need an ahpra registration to go on with it wc I heard can take a while sometimes. last march we applied and got the conditional offer letter last april 8, the only condition was they need to have idp see the original prc cert w scores so they can certify it, wc as of this writing we have already done and our agent has already sent to unisa. they also said it wouldn't take long for us to receive the unconditional offer.

now we asked our agent thru mail that since we are for October intake, when would be the best time to pay the hefty tuition fee since its like 6 moths away and your not allowed to apply for a visa not less than 4 mos before ur departure date? the tf is an aweful lot of money wc as of the moment I don't have all of it yet and i would wana maximize its use for my business but not pay too late that we may lose the slot for the arntp! when we asked our agent who has been always accomodating, I understand it was tru email so she has to comply w company rules that her answer was a straight asap so as to guarantee the slot. what do you guys think? or for those who has done it w unisa?

second issue is, since arntp does not require ahpra registration, we asked our agent if its ok that since we have a few months left before October, would it be smart if we start with the application for registration while we are still here as to maximize the time frame? her suggestion was no, she said that it is not the usual practice and that may interfere with the proper flow of the program, she even said that we wouldn't have a problem registering after the program as the school actually assist but what we can do is that we start as soon as the gf starts with the program. my concern tho that as far as what I have read, registration is not as simple as they are making it sound so I just wana know whats the best thing to do?

the general plan was like this, although we are not yet married, we are hinging on the idea that my gf can bring me with her as a dependent since being married is not such a big deal to them as to us, wc in turn allows me to work 40 hrs a week wc hopefully keeps us afloat while shes doing arntp, I know for a fact that my friends in Sydney are with a student visa but are able to make a good living with their spouses working as dependent so im hoping that will be the same for us just so we can get thru with her program, hopefully this is a good plan!

the admins and the ones that have done arntp, please give us your advise and if there is something wrong with what I am doing or assuming, feel free to say so.. this will also help a lot of those who is about to embark on this journey.. or should I say.. risk!

please tell us about your experience in adelaide, how is it there? the registration process? was it really hard to get a job?

thank you in advance!

I know that there is a short supply of people sharing when everything has been done.. but I pledge that I will be back and say our story as a way to help others.. that's a promise!

Hi! Is there anyone here who would also be taking the may 31 intake at deakin university burwood campus?? Im from manila. Kindly email me at [email protected] so we could help each other out. :)

Hi Noveau,

I was about to send you a private message but apparently, your inbox setting does not allow to receive pm's.

I would like to ask if the certificate of good standing you sent to APHRA was electronically sent to you by Saudi Council? If so, was there a note below the certificate indicating that that the cert. could only be valid if downloaded on the link provided?

Also, were you registered as a Nurse Technician or Nurse Specialist in KSA?

Hoping for your response and help :)

Thank you!

Hello machaix,

M sorry but i do not have access to private messaging and i dnt know why...

When i requested mine i just went to the office of the saudi council in the hospital, the new website service is not yet available that time, so i just paid 300 at ncb located also inside the hospital coumpound and gave my receipt to saudi council then i just came back after 4 weeks then i sent the document via dhl.

Mine is nurse technician but either of the two is just the same, ahpra will still assess ur cv so it really does not matter.

I think it's best to ask a saudi council officer on how things work if u wanna get the certificate of good standing via online. If u already have it then send it to ahpra via fedex or dhl in the mailing/post office located inside ur hospital compound.

Hope my info is enough glad to help.

i don't have the 'expertise' to give fool-proof pieces of advice, but from my experience with applying for eligibility from ahpra and from what i gathered in your post, my take is that since you are still planning for the october intake, why not do it the proper way and apply for eligibility first and then choose your school afterwards. you know, the time that you have spent since you laid your/your gf's plans of undertaking the IRON program, it would have been more than sufficient time for her to complete her requirements for AHPRA and to receive her eligibility.. that way she wouldn't have any conditions to think of after she finishes the program.. also, you would have to make sure that you may have your visa approval as well, there have been changes in some visa categories and you may want to browse over your chances of getting your visa as a common-law partner, as well as your restrictions (whether allowed to do part-time work or not) when you do receive one. good luck!

Dependants are suppose to be working only 40 hrs a fortnight....legally while the student partner also is to work only 40 hours a fortnight...legally. If you work for an employer they need to take tax out which all gets recorded and they can work out how often you are working.....Many though, overseas students and dependents work çash in hand' which is illegal. If you find work as a nurse assistant this will be difficult because everything must go through the books....tax etc and you will be playing with fire to work over the 40 hours a fortnight. It goes from sunday to Monday, so no working full time for a couple of weeks then not working for a couple.

Hi again!

Are you from RKH? I hope I could send you pm's. If you don't mind, here's my email ad- [email protected]

Thanks :)

@ councilor28, i read the restrictions for student visa; it states there that if the student is to undergo less than 12 months of study, the dependent will not be allowed to do part-time work.

i don't have the 'expertise' to give fool-proof pieces of advice, but from my experience with applying for eligibility from ahpra and from what i gathered in your post, my take is that since you are still planning for the october intake, why not do it the proper way and apply for eligibility first and then choose your school afterwards. you know, the time that you have spent since you laid your/your gf's plans of undertaking the IRON program, it would have been more than sufficient time for her to complete her requirements for AHPRA and to receive her eligibility.. that way she wouldn't have any conditions to think of after she finishes the program.. also, you would have to make sure that you may have your visa approval as well, there have been changes in some visa categories and you may want to browse over your chances of getting your visa as a common-law partner, as well as your restrictions (whether allowed to do part-time work or not) when you do receive one. good luck!

yea we actually considered the iron program and it was perfect because there was a june intake.. right around the time I finish my term in office, however the iron has been filled up already since dec 2012 if im not mistaken.. iron is not only cheaper but also shorter, my reservation tho w the iron is the weather in Melbourne..

and for the ahpra registration, the thing is as per unisa as ur school.. the proper way is to apply for registration when u get there as they don't require ahpra registration to go into the program, basicaly if you got the experience of at least 2 years and u have the money for the tf.. u can go. thats why we are torn between processing the ahpra registration and make use of the time we have til oct, or do as to what our idp agent has advised that we should go w the proper flow of the program to process her registration the moment she gets to oz.. any suggestions guys from ur experience? especially those unisa grads? tia!

@ councilor28, i read the restrictions for student visa; it states there that if the student is to undergo less than 12 months of study, the dependent will not be allowed to do part-time work.

thanx emes, good thing tho is that arntp runs for 18 mos! hehe! technically il be allowed to work,.., I might be wrong w this assumptions but in the end it will depend upon the visa that will be issued to us..

again, I might be wrong w these assumptions but hopefully il be able to share what will happen to us.

I liked unisa, coz of a couple of things

pros: you don't need to register w ahpra to enroll so theoretically if u have the money and u qualify u can go.

it runs for 18 weeks so technically the dependent would be allowed to work which I think may be the big difference wether you sink or swim there.

its in Adelaide which according to my friends there has almost the same weather here and much stable than the other territories plus the cost of living is lower as well wc is a huge plus!

cons: it is much more expensive at almost 16k plus

runs longer at 18 months

feel free to let me know if there is something wrong with my infos or my assumptions, I wont be able to know not until we get there.. but what I know for fact is that altho they are in Sydney wc in turn has a highr cost of living, but I have a couple of friends that are doing well w their student visas not even nurses nor has any plans of getting sponsorship, but is able to make a good living,, all I want is for the gf to get a sponsorship, hopefully get a pr and ensure my little one's future.

"its in Adelaide which according to my friends there has almost the same weather here and much stable than the other territories plus the cost of living is lower as well wc is a huge plus!"

Stable weather!! Same as the Phills. Oh please have a look on a map, Melbourne looks at Adelaide to know what the next days weather will be. Choosing a BP school to the weather, when this is your future quite estounding.

The arntp program is six months not 18 months. to have Phils weather Darwin, Cairns, Kunanurra, Broome are the best choices. Which have unstable weather, cyclones, tropical heavy rain etc.

Adelaide also has a less population to the the other cities and has universities offering conversionn courses to overseas nurses and also has 3 universities graduating local nurse graduates therefore low chances same as unstable Sydney and Melbourne to find work.

However yes, Adelaide less cost of living, but not by much, if you check out the rents etc
