medical terminology help!!

Hi all

I'm having a very hard time memorizing all the terms, prefixes, suffixes, etc...

Anybody knows a better way to study the medical lenguage??

Any suggestion or tip will be very aprreciated.

I think it helps to have some sort of anatomy training first. Alot of the words relate to where they are on the body. Hyper is elevated, hypo is decreased. itis - in inflammation Some of it is just memorization. Sorry I could not be of more help.

The book that I listed above starts at the beginning and teaches you about prefixes and suffixes before going onto anything else. It will also be a big helpt to you in your other classes. You do not need an anatomy background to use this book.

I looked around for 6 months to find a book that would cover everything and this one does. :)

I had a hard time trying to remember all of the stuff to begin with, too. I got index cards and wrote all of the prefixes, suffixes, common terms, etc. on them. When I would get free time, I would pull them out and review. Eventually, I could recall most of them immediately. The ones I have problems with I still keep with me.

Absolutely use flashcards!!

I take about 10 at a time...study them, flip thru them until I get them all right, then set them aside....get another 10 and do the same thing before adding them to the others you've learned....then go thru THAT group and set aside any you didn't know immediately...repeat, repeat, repeat.

It's the only way to memorize material, imo...

I have found that all I really need to do to remember something is to write it down.

Once I have looked at it, read it and written it I can then begin using it. Once I begin using it, I've got it.

We used videos at the Area Tech Center where I did my CNA and basic intro to nursing course work. It was a set of videos from the 80's that were really corny. Like for Gastr- they would do gastr- sounds like gas truck and you would see a gas truck then the tank of the truck turned into a stomach. It reviewed the three parts several times and you had worksheets to review. The different pictures were all so weird that you would remember it all. We all did really well and got college credit for the class. I loved Medical Terminology. I think that it is a very useful course. You can take the word parts and figure out what most medical words mean. Very very good to have hope you can find what works for you.

That sound too cool! Corny does stick in your mind. But hey anything that makes it stick is worth having.

I still remember the corny VD films we had to watch. They were from WWII and Korea! LOL It was a course in public health and they were the intro to the course to demonstrate how far or not so far public health has come. They were pretty weird. Not one time, as I remember was sex, penis, etc actually spoken during the films from WWII or Korea but the one from Nam did use the "dirty" words. LOL
