Medical Professionals Abusing Drugs

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Lately I have witnessed some very scary things from people I know.

1. I was invited to a party or get together with some people that work at a very well known hospital where I am doing clinicals. The people that invited me were all medical professionals a medic, nurse BSN, ER charge nurse MSN, nurse MSN student, physical therapist, unit clerk, trauma nurse BSN and respiratory therapist. When I get to this party they are all high and or drunk. They had exstacy, coke, nitris oxide (whippets), hard alcohol and crystal meth. I stayed with them and had some drinks as I watched the night unfold. this was about 10pm when I got there. The house is across the street from the hospital. they proceed to do all these drugs at once to my dismay. I was absolutly dumbfounded, here these are people that I look up to, as they are very very good at what they do in the hospital and they are doing illegal drugs. the worst thing about all this is that 2 of the nurses and the respiratory therapist had to be at work at 7am the next morning. At about 4am they start freakin out cause they have to go to work soon and are in no shape to do so. At this point one of the other nurses gets a large amount of coke out of her car and instructs them to do as much as they can so that they will be awake and sharp for work. At this point I was like you guys are crazy at least call in sick. They were like no way I can't do that, so I asked what would happen if they killed a patient due to their current condition. The charge nurse proceded to tell me that they would not kill anyone and that even if they did get caught they would not get fired cause the hospital could not afford to lose any nurses.

I was like isn't that agianst the law for them not to fire you if you were caught?

2. One of the ladies that was there at that party 30 years of age and going to school for her PNP recently attempted to kill herself. She had been doing Meth for three days on top of extacy, when she was having "guy troubles" then crushed up a bottle of tylenol and drank it with coffee. Later another guy who is an RT finds her in a pool of blood and vomit and takes her to the next town's hospital so her own work mates don't see her this way. Her tox screen came back positive for all these drugs adn she stays in ICU for a week as they could not stabilize her for a while. When she recovers she loses her house, quits her job and moves a couple hours away to live with her parents while she recovers. As soon as she moves there is she gets another nursing job.

Now my thoughts on this are: why didn't this girl lose her nursing license after having all these drugs in her system? If these people were caught at work doing this they would be fired and lose their license right? and How on earth can these people be sooo smart but sooo stupid at the same time. Sorry for the long post but I was really confused by all this as I think that healthcare professionals should be upper class citizens and not engage in these activities and that they should be punished if they do. They could ahev killed someone. Your thoughts, experiences and knowledge on this subject would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.:( :( :scrying:

WOW, strange thread! There sure have been quite a few lately. Never seen or heard of a group of very well educated people act this way. But, I guess stranger things have happened:confused: .

One of the other posters asked why did you stay and I am going to go a bit futher and say you are just like them in that you did stay thus condoning the actions you witnessed.

Do you realize that if there was a bust in that house you would have been arrested and possilby charged -- cops do not take the time to wait and see when they are doing a group arrest -- everybody goes and everybody is charged.

I had a similar situation about 10yrs ago not all medical folks but plenty. I was asked to put my coat in the bedroom and when I walked in there was a ER nurse and anesthesia Md doing lines of coke off a small mirror -- and pills on a dresser of all types. I kept my coat and told the host that I just got a beeped from my brother regarding him needing a ride and I had to go.

You need to be more responsible for you and your license and know abit more about putting yourself in a vulneralbe situation that could have cost you your career. MYOB about the others and take care of you.

I know this sounded harsh but I think staying i s condoning - I sincerely hopw you do not put yourself in that situation agian.

Excuse me, but why did YOU stay at a party where people were taking illicit substances? If YOU knew people were impaired on the job, why didn't YOU report them?

And do you know for a fact (not via a third party) that the nurse you referred to attempted to OD? How did you become privy to this information? And if it's true, are you aware that you have just committed a huge HIPAA violation? You had better hope she or someone she knows doesn't read this post. People have been ID'd in the past here and have been disciplined by employers.

If you knew people were coming to work impaired and you did not report it, you would be just as liable legally for any adverse event. And I have to wonder why anyone would stay for hours at a party where people were taking illegal drugs.

Sounds like a student paper made up story looking for responses to me. But yes I have worked in a few units that did have a high number of pot users on a casual basis. I have never found a whole unit of workers at the same shooting gallery.

I had similar thoughts. This doesn't pass the smell test.

Well, I must admit, if this really happend its a shame... Very disheartening to hear that so many professionals from the same hospital are binging on illicit drugs together. I'm gonna go ahead and suggest that the story sounds a bit far fetched though (BS???). Kinda tough to swallow that the OP is able to recall the Jobs as well as professional credentials (ie BSN, MSN, etc.) of all eight members involved in polysubstance abuse including cocaine, ecstacy, methamphetamines, nitrous oxide, EtOH, etc and using it all together in the same night across the street from the hospital... and that 6hrs had elapsed and the OP remained in the situation and even observerd the "ER charge nurse MSN" instructed the others to "do [coke] as much as they can to be sharp for work" Sorry but I just don't buy it... Good attention getting story though...

I agree with BAndersonRN - this has got to be something for school - because it's just too much to swallow. Seriously - when you get that many professionals together we not only do cocaine and estacy and pot but we MUST have a few narcotics and heroine thrown in for good measure lol geez.:uhoh3: (*just in case you can't tell my bit is a joke*)

For those of you who don't believe this story you need to open your eyes. Why on earth would I or anyone make up something like this. Today I typed a letter and gave it to the hospital admin and my school director as these people were preceptors. I think that this goes on a lot in the world and some of us were too niave to realize it. I did not leave right away as I was with several other nursing students and I was not driving. I will never do that agian though. I really wish that nurses were not soo harsh, I was appalled to see the responses of some people toward me.

Thank you to the last few posters. I posted this story to get info on the subject cause I didn't understand why these people were gettimg away with this as well as to see if others had had this experience. I was also looking for the right way to report it. Thank you for your support.

Well - IF it indeed was true, I apologize to the OP. The fact is it's just too much to believe, and I'm sorry - I still don't believe it, but still I do truly apologize if it is true.

I'm not quite sure why some here are being cynical regarding your post. I believe you. As far as so many types of drugs at the party...isn't that common with hardcore drug users?

p.s. I know I am going to sound like a little-old-lady...but I just don't go to parties unless it's at my Unitarian church or a family get-together. I've never seen drugs (except mj) and the thought of being in this kind of atmosphere and without a car, etc is just too scary to me. I have a good friend who was sexually assualted years ago in a scenerio quite similar to the one you described. She is disabled with the worst PTSD you can imagine, still. These situations (parties, no car, late night, drinking) just aren't good to be in. -Off my soapbox-
