Medicaid-How long does it take?

I work in hospice. My patient applied for medicaid in August and was approved for medicaid in August. My mother's lawyer applied for medicaid on June 15th for my mother who has alzheimer's and CHF and still has not received an answer. How long does it usually take to get a yes or no answer in regards to applying for medicaid? Thanks for any assistance or advice.

I used to work with someone who got her LPN. She said that she would be paid a certain amount to take care of her child so many hours per day. However, the child is medically fragile.... multiple handicaps, on a vent, etc. The child requires and medicaid approves 24 hour nursing.

good info re wash. states program. in other states it is called ma wavier (i.e. wavier to keep person out of nursing home). as with all medical assistance programs, federal govenment pays portion and state goven. pays portion so programs vary slightly from state to state, some do not have program.

i have always found it interesting that although medicaid is a federal program, each state runs it so differently. it would benefit so many people if more states had the home programs. nj is trying to get something going, but it just seems to keep petering out.

blackcat, try to get your mother into an adult day program 2 days a week, gives you and her a breather.

another program developed to keep patients out of nursing homes + enhance quality of life is pace: program of all inclusive care for the elderly.

pace programs coordinate and provide all needed preventive, primary, acute and long term care services so older individuals can continue living in the community. covers all healthcare services, daycare, cost of drugs, meals on wheels; adult day care where patients can see eye doctor, get pt, see barber/haidresser, socialize etc ;along with in home care services if needed. patients are case managed with team approach under md/np direction. they do everything to keep someone out of snf/hospital as they have to pay for those sevices too. they are gatekeepers for all healthcare patients receive. patients need to have medicare and eligibility for medical assistance.

in pa we call them life programs as pace is pharmaceutical ssistance for the elderly, prestablished program. pa is lucky to have 6 life programs across the state.

Thanks again NRSKarenRN. :wink2: Yes, adult day care is wonderful!!!! Mom has been going to adult day care for a long time. I can't get anything done when Mom is at home. I would never had made it without adult day care. That's for sure. I have never heard of the PACE program so I will definately have to check it out.

Update. It turned out that the lawyer had never sent in the medicaid application!!!!! :madface: :madface: :madface: He told me he had sent it in on June 15th. He said he thought he had but then found the application still sitting on his desk!!!! It finally got mailed yesterday Sept. 11th. :(

I know a person who lives in Ohio that was paid to take care of her own mother. Apparently from what she told me even if your state doent pay a family member to take care of a elderly person in that family member happens to work home health as a cna or nurse than the agency at its descretion can assign that person to their own family member. This way payment is not made directly to the family member and the agency over sees and keeps records of the family members care. I am sure though that there is more to it due to privacy regulations.

UUGGGHH!!!!!

I am SO sorry to hear that blackcat! I am currently working with about 3 people who have their lawyers "working on medicaid" for them. It is amazing that I need to stay on their backs more than I have to with medicaid themselves.

Any way to get your money back???

OMG!!!! See..I had a gut feeling something was up with this!!! I wonder if the lawyer "conviently" forgot.............until you called...bet he/she wasn't expecting that! I bet he had no problem remembering to cash that check though as payment ..............I would DEMAND some form of compensation or something from this idiot.............you could be a pitbull yet tactful by mentioning it like this......." you ARE going to compensate mom , after all....it was YOUR error it wasn't sent in when you claimed" or " You are compensating mom for all the waiting for something that should of been done along time ago"..........Do not take it lightly that he "forgot"...if he forgot something like filing a medicaid application........what happens if it were something else that was very very important????????

People just don't give a crap these days and it goes up my rear end sideways!!!!! Sorry to get on my soapbox...but I find that you need to ride peoples butts to get anywhere............it's a shame really.......The squeeky wheel gets the oil!!!!

Was reading about how your mom had applied for medicaid. Was just wondering how long did it actually take for her to get approved?

I am currently with a lawyer who is doing all the paperwork to get my mom approved for medicaid. Only thing is she transferred all her assets to me a couple years ago and I don't know how that is going to factor into the approval processes.

Any information you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
