Med questions on NCLEX

Published

I have been doing Saunders newest book and CD. I am doing fairly well with it. However, I came across an Aids study test and, I swear, it all seemed like it was just drugs. Right now I am doing the CD study on pharmacology and so far I am getting drug questions that you really need a PDR to look up, like what is the proper dosage, side effects, and of course what is it used for. My calculations are good, but the other questions are making me feel very insecure.

How can you memorize all these questions?

It is my understanding that if the computer picks up on something that you are not strong in, it just keeps asking you the same category of questions. If this is true, how can it be said that pharmacology is 13-19%?

Sure could use some reassurance. NCLEX is May 19th.

Thanks, all.

I don't think you should concentrate so much on dasages. Just know main drug categories, indications and side effects. I honestly hardly knew any of my meds.

I took the NCLEX on 5/7/05 and it cut off at 75. I had lots of meds that i did not know. I studied by learning (for example) drugs ending in lol were beta blockers, and so on. I just learned specifics on beta blockers, ace inhibitors, calcium channel blockers and so on. When I had a drug I didn't know by recognizing the class I was able to pretty well narrow down the answer.

Hi Melissa: Thanks for your reply. I sure got caught up short on these meds, I was so busy studying everything else. I take my NCLEX 5/19. I see what you are saying, so I know some of the classes, but I didn't quite understand what you meant by drugs ending in lol. Oh now I see, they were beta blockers. You are clever. Any other tips you can send my way, I'd appreciate. Thank you very much.

Was anyone else out there surprised that there were not more med questions on the nclex? I had very few questions that had anything to do with meds.On my first test I wish i had spent more time focusing on safety issues with disasters, and mrsa, rsv, and tb. By not focusing on safety I fell to the lower level questions and was hooked by the mechanical malfunction questions. Being right out of school I did not have an understanding of respiratory or PT equipment much less being able to determine if it was malfunctioning, and a slew of questions where I had to pick out the best menu for the patient.

to be honest i didn't focus medication when studying for the nclex. i picked only a couple that i feel it would be there. digoxin, lasix, antibiotic-aminoglycoside, dilantic, beta blocker, heparin, coumadin...

i only had about 3-4drug questions in my nclex. it was very hard. i dont know if i would suggest to you to study by a handful of drugs. this plan worked for me though. good luck!!!! :balloons:

so how did the test go for you?

the test in my opinion could not be study!?! sounds odd but i studied for about 3months and nothing was there. i took kaplan-only good for the questions. i would recommended maybe just buying the QBANK from them. it has 1000 questions and the most similiar to the nclex out of all the other questions. my friend did just saunder, nclex 3000, kaplan questions and passed.

i would recommend just take practice nclex exams.

i had about 3-4drugs ??? forgot but it wasn't hard; keep it general. they were asking you do you know what this drug is for? and what would it do? labs peak and trough??? do you need it for these drugs? like PT - for heparin.

I passed with 75 questions. i only had about 4 med questions.
