Hey ! I know im super early to make this thread for the MDE program at Columbia for the 2021 start year ? but I was wondering if there are any future nurses out there as eager as me to get started !!
@KAS212 have my bachelors in Global Health too! Look at us! CONGRATS on graduating - what a time to graduate during COVID-19. I started interning in sexual and reproductive health education/programs and then worked my way up into the organization and now operate as the Country Director in Tanzania! It has been a great experience in public health programming - but I have always wanted to pursue being a clinician. So now I run different health interventions - sexual health, gender-based violence, women's empowerment etc. buuuut I don't have any experience in the healthcare setting. (I am worried they will want candidates who are in the hospitals already, in some capacity - but maybe not)
I don't think I will apply this round - just because I would have to start next year - and moving to New York right away sounds overwhelming. I want to complete my leadership in TZ before leaving - so I might apply next year! I think you might be right about the MPH though - it seems like I could just try to apply to Columbia next year!
Thank you so much for your feedback! I think you are right! I should go for it - but I will probably wait until next year! I can't imagine leaving my staff quite yet - and moving to New York to jump into a difficult program right away.
Do you guys know if there are any online workshops/information sessions coming up? I would love to attend and learn more to feel prepared!
And please keep me updated how your application process goes! I am very excited for all of you - this program is incredible! Are you both pursuing the DNP option - if so which ones are you interested in and why?
They have an info session this Wednesday June 3rd ! They are very helpful and they also advise you to email their admissions department for any questions:) I am going to pursue the DNP option after, most likely Psychiatric Mental Health NP. I heard they don’t have much psychiatrists, and a NP would basically fit as the Primary Care provider. Plus you get to prescribe medications that you think will help the patients. I know a lot of people struggle with their mental health and I would love to give care to those patients. Im super excited for this program!!
I honestly wouldn’t worry about not having healthcare experience but I also wouldn’t consider what you do not healthcare related. If you are worried you could volunteer or get your CNA, I would take advantage of that if you apply next year since you’ll have some time. I am applying to the adult gerontology primary care DNP because, I LOVE adult and geriatrics. Geriatrics is my favorite place to be; especially the population with Alzheimer’s and dementia. I work closely with them(: Acute care also intrigued me. I had worked in the ICU for awhile but, I like primary much more because I can build relationships that last years with my patients ? I was thinking FNP but I am really not a huge fan of taking care of children. IDK why, I feel like I sound so mean and awful saying that??? I am nice I promise!!
