Hey ! I know im super early to make this thread for the MDE program at Columbia for the 2021 start year ? but I was wondering if there are any future nurses out there as eager as me to get started !!

For me personally, I had gotten into the ABSN portion of UPenn’s program but did not get into the Masters portion. In the acceptance letter, they mention that we can still apply to the MSN portion after doing 1 or 2 semesters of the ABSN but admission is not guaranteed. I didn’t really feel too good about taking this gamble. Since I already have a bachelors in health sciences, I feel like it’s a waste a money to go to such an expensive program just for another bachelors. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a fantastic program and I’ve heard amazing things about it, but financially If I’m going to spend 100k+ on an education I’d rather it be at the graduate level! I have 2 other schools I’m currently between (UVA and UCLA) as well as waiting for Columbia. As a California resident, UCLA is my top choice as of now!

Thanks for the response! UCLA is a great school! I think that both the ABSN and CNL would put you at the same end goal as a bedside nurse though, right? I'm still trying to learn all of the direct-entry options.

I feel you on this! I do prefer a masters over another bachelors since I had to go into students loans for my first one. And I don’t really want to pay soo much for another one. Thats my personal preference and I do want my DNP too. For me, NY does not really have much masters direct entry programs at all, its mostly ABSN programs. So I hope after all this waiting I get an acceptance to Columbia ?

Yeah I think I might just go to a program in my home city. I won’t have to worry much about anything and its just a tad bit cheaper. The prestige of Columbia and NYC is truly blinding haha.

This is correct! Both programs would result in taking the NCLEX and earning an RN. The only major difference would be a BSN-RN vs an MSN-RN. Both are able to practice bedside, however, I know for me personally, an RN is not my end goal. I would like to eventually go on to pursue a DNP and getting an MSN would be a huge step in that direction. My goal would be to use my MSN-RN to work bedside for a few years before pursing my DNP. I know there are some dnp programs that allow you to apply with a BSN but they’re much more limited and highly highly competitive. After doing a ton of research, it feels like overall MSN-RNs have much more upward mobility compared to a BSN-RN! I’m sure there are a ton of opportunities as a BSN-RN but this was just the better move for me. I hope this helps!
@Nat31 Thanks so much! It's been great reading different people's goals and perspectives on these threads because it really opens your eyes to what's out there! Applying to schools only gives you so much information. I asked UPenn for a current student that I can talk to and for an extension on my deposit due date to have more time to decide. I'm crossing my fingers for you to get into Columbia and UCLA!
Does anyone know how important medical experience is to Columbia? Like does one who has experience working with patients as a CNA for example, more competitive than someone who doesn’t have any medical experience? (Like myself) Sorry just really second guessing myself as the time is getting closer to decisions and I'm so nervous!!

I’m also waitlisted!! Hoping I’ll get off of it but I don’t have much hope ? hopefully you’ll get off the waitlist too!
