Hey ! I know im super early to make this thread for the MDE program at Columbia for the 2021 start year ? but I was wondering if there are any future nurses out there as eager as me to get started !!

At this point, with all the waiting and not sure when things will be back to normal, I feel that everyone should go where they will feel comfortable. I can’t really move out of NYC to other schools in different states because of some responsibilities I have here. But if I had the choice, I definitely would and probably put Columbia last : /

I agree. I know so many people are wondering and with classes being virtual it doesn’t make sense for me to move to NY if I am just going to be sitting in a apartment majority of the time. Im not sure if I want to pay all that money for rent and expenses when I could most likely go to a school thats near me. I wanted to experience NYC but... im not sure.

Thats what a lot of peoples concerns are. I don’t have much options but if it was up to me I would’ve probably went somewhere else if I could. Did you already get accepted? Or waiting in the second rounds?

I got accepted in the first rounds! To be brutally honest I was so excited that CUSON accepted me that I paid the deposit the same exact day and did not even think twice about it. I feel really silly now because it is non-refundable and I’m now starting to think about things realistically LOL. I also do not want to defer until next year because I just want to get the ball rolling with nursing school this year.

Are there any nursing schools that are doing in person learning RN? It seems like all the schools I’ve applied to are doing virtual learning with in person labs+clinical ? I took 2 years off school already and don’t really want to take a 3rd but now I’m wondering if I should do that

I’m not 100% sure if other schools are doing in person learning. I mean, if majority is virtual I don’t think I want to pick up and move to NYC just to learn virtually. And then the stress of finding an apartment in a nice area and being a student in a whole new city during a pandemic ? I don’t know. I may just go somewhere close to me so I don’t have to worry about moving and expenses. Still need to think really hard about this. Also thinking should I wait it out and defer for next year.

I was in the same situation as you. I was accepted in the first rounds and decided to not pay $500 to hold my spot. That’s a lot of money and I had to think long and hard if it’s worth it or not. I was also debating if I wanted to withdraw my application but then decisions came out the next day LOL.
I decided to not attend Columbia because of the same worries you mentioned, and also because of the cost. I feel that with virtual learning the tuition is ridiculous because we wouldn’t get to experience in person learning and get a good feel of the school. I don’t feel comfortable with paying all those loans for just virtual learning and I do work better in a school setting than over a computer screen.
If I had known about the deferment earlier I may have done it but its too late now. I decided to attend an ABSN program in my home city so now I don’t have to worry about moving, looking for apartments, expenses, etc. And even though deferment was not offered much earlier, I think im still happy with my choice. Less stress, the better!

I think it’s a bit shady that they chose to send this deferment email after people had already turned their acceptances down. And then asking for another $500 on top oof
