I was in the same situation as you. I was accepted in the first rounds and decided to not pay $500 to hold my spot. That’s a lot of money and I had to think long and hard if it’s worth it or not. I was also debating if I wanted to withdraw my application but then decisions came out the next day LOL.

I decided to not attend Columbia because of the same worries you mentioned, and also because of the cost. I feel that with virtual learning the tuition is ridiculous because we wouldn’t get to experience in person learning and get a good feel of the school. I don’t feel comfortable with paying all those loans for just virtual learning and I do work better in a school setting than over a computer screen.

If I had known about the deferment earlier I may have done it but its too late now. I decided to attend an ABSN program in my home city so now I don’t have to worry about moving, looking for apartments, expenses, etc. And even though deferment was not offered much earlier, I think im still happy with my choice. Less stress, the better!

I’m in the same boat. I’m in second round for Columbia but got into UPenn. I’m considering going to my state school instead. I also wish the start date was later than June.

I’m not 100% sure if other schools are doing in person learning. I mean, if majority is virtual I don’t think I want to pick up and move to NYC just to learn virtually. And then the stress of finding an apartment in a nice area and being a student in a whole new city during a pandemic ?  I don’t know. I may just go somewhere close to me so I don’t have to worry about moving and expenses. Still need to think really hard about this. Also thinking should I wait it out and defer for next year.

It’s definitely really stressful ? I wish you the best and hopefully you make the best decision for yourself!

Congratulations on UPenn! Thats an amazing school and super competitive. I would’ve chose that over Columbia any day haha!

To anyone wondering or just wants some insight - I’m in the NYC area.

I am still waiting for the seconds rounds and want to stay home, not looking to leave NYC, just because I don’t want to move to an entirely new city to just sit in an apartment!

but right now NYC is not what it use to be. Social life is not there. Yes, restaurants are open but it’s not the same NYC. No tourists, barley anyone on the streets walking around, and Crime has definitely risen!

this is what I have experienced since Covid as started and I 1000% see everyone’s concerns!

Thanks so much! I'm super excited about it and just waiting for my financial aid now. It's super expensive so that's the only reason I'm not dead set on going ?

I am also from NYC and I can agree to this ! I feel like next year we’ll be back to almost normal. Because I know things won’t ever be like how they used to be ?

I have a friend in New York who also told me the same things. It’s very unfortunate. I feel like were all expecting to experience NY like what we see in the movies and such ? but there’s a pandemic going on and things are hard.

EXACTLY! I just think about it in the opposite scenario!! Like do I want to move to Philly or Atlanta because I know it’s not the same!

Those are such valid points. I think that’s also a reason why CUSON gave us the option to defer to 2022. Im thinking if I should take advantage of that deferral offer..since I know that is a guaranteed acceptance.

It’s definitely something to think about today! I just didn’t want people thinking it’s the same NYC that it was pre Covid! Rent still isn’t cheap and cost of living in this city has not come down

Hi All, NYC Resident here. Still waiting on the second round but just wanted to clarify:

NYC Rent is still pretty high regardless of the pandemic. I understand not wanting to move, but if you do decide to attend CU you will need to be in the city. It seems like clinical's and sims labs will still be in person even if classes are virtual. So twice a week you'd be in person. Also whatever partner hospital you do your clinical's at could be anywhere across NYC, so try not to focus too hard on location proximity to CU for housing.

You won't have the social life thing for quite a bit as everything here is still closed or on limited time openings. Outdoor dining is a thing, if you're into that.

Highly suggest roommates and looking outside of just the parameters of Washington Heights. The Bronx is right across the bridge if you're willing to commute. Theres also the George Washington, straight across from Jersey if you're driving or OK with that.

Anywho.. If you have any other questions about moving here feel free to ask. ?

I recently turned down UPenn so maybe they’ll give you some of my financial aid ? students helping students!
