MDC Miami Dade College Nursing Fall 2021

Published

It's never too early to start the discussion....

Anyone else preparing to apply to the Nursing program at MDC by May 1, for a Fall 2021 start date? Which tracks? TEAS test plans?

If I’m not mistaken, the AA covers all the pre-reqs needed for a BSN so after the first nursing program you can go straight to your BSN without having to do other classes in between.

Honestly yes! Just picking the ones you are missing should work, but I think the combination of pre-reqs for the ASN, plus the ones for the BSN are already enough credits to receive an AA and all you’d have to do is apply for graduation. Hope I explained it well LOL. And I think thats considered the Pre-Nursing pathway.

Probably sometime shortly after Spring semester starts.

Does anyone know what actually goes into the GPA? I read in another set of posts for a prior class that HSC0003 does NOT--- does the CGS class?

I was told science classes only. My HSC0003 professor did inform us that the class will not count towards our GPA.

Does anyone know what's the competitive TEAS score?

This one I can answer now - I also was told about the HSC class not counting. But, as far as other classes there's an overall GPA (seems to be actual overall GPA, not just the required classes for the ASN and that makes sense because someone above even said they are doing the AA pathway), a second natural sciences GPA, and then the TEAS score all counting for 1/3 of the qualifying score each.

I think it's impossible to know what the competitive TEAS score is going to be because we don't know how many people are applying to get into the program each time, and the May 1 deadline might have a crazy amount of applicants because of Covid making them go back to school. If you read the previous semester posts from MDC, seems like most people that confirm they get in are scoring at least 80 or sometimes 85.

Hey everyone. Currently in the program so decided to come and try to answer some questions I’ve seen.

-HSC is required and I believe you’re required to have the lab done with it.

-Microbiology lab is not a requirement/prereq to get into the program but you will need it to graduate. If you do not take it before entering the program, you will need to take it along with your nursing courses in order to graduate.

-CGS has an exam you can take to test out of the program. You can do this while enrolled in the program up until I believe the second semester but it’s best to get out of the way now since you have time before classes start. If you do the test rather than the class, it will not count towards your GPA of course but it will satisfy the requirement for graduation.

-There is a Baptist program that will pay for your tuition and have a job upon graduating that you can apply to after you get accepted into the program. You will need to have all of your generic classes done for the bachelors program to be considered. There’s info on the MDC website.

I know it’s difficult not to stress about whether you did enough to qualify and get accepted. Realistically, the GPA’s and TEAS scores that get accepted are all over the place. It will depend on how many ppl apply and of course the higher the scores the better.

MDC is an amazing program. In my experience, the professors want you to succeed and will help you as long as you put in the work and follow what they recommend.

As far as the schedule, first semester schedule for me was

Monday 8-1045am  then  2-445pm

Tuesday 11-130pm  then  430-550pm (drops after I think 6 weeks)

Thursday 7-3pm clinicals (starts at end of first month)

Keep in mind, there are classes all day into the evenings and I believe possibly on weekends. You are given your schedule & teachers. Second semester is 4-5 days a week and I know some have clinicals on weekends. Clinicals are two days a week second semester.

MDC has tutors available, the teachers are pretty good at responding to emails for help or questions & making friends in the program to go through this journey isn’t hard and def recommended. If you have any other questions, I’ll try to come back and answer them if I know the answer. Good luck to everyone!

Thank you for all of your input and information!

When do you apply for the Baptist program? Is it directly after the ASN acceptance? And by the generic courses, do you mean all of the others not included with the ASN but required for the BSN (psych, sociology, stats, English 2, history, etc)?

Have you seen the likelihood of the classes scheduled being somewhat cohesive? In other words, do they just randomize everything based on your campus or do they try to make sure your time is maximized by scheduling classes close together/same days?

Thank you!

You can apply to the Baptist program once you have your acceptance email from MDC. You will need it to submit your application along with your references, and I think transcripts. The application is on the MDC website with the due dates and requirements. And yes, those classes you mentioned for the BSN program are required to be completed prior to applying.

As far as scheduling, It's done by random pools. One person registers everyone randomly for their courses. Only thing I've noticed from one semester to the next is it seems like they try to keep students in the same/similar schedules or teachers each semester but its not always the case. Also, everything as of right now is being done online. We are required to sign on at our scheduled class time and be in uniform just as you would if you were on campus. They have started to open the skills lab at the medical campus for certain days a week to practice hands on skills this semester so that's very helpful. We use the ATI program as part of our coursework and its an amazing tool if you use it. Each semester you are required to take an ATI final exam for your classes (first semester is only funds, second is Pharm & med surg etc) along with the professors final exam.

Micro lecture and lab, or just lab? So it doesn’t count towards your science GPA? I was told that intro to Health doesn’t affect our GPA either.

Micro *lab* does not have to be done prior to getting into the ASN program, and it doesn't have to be taken the same semester as the lecture. It just has to be done for the BSN.

It's going to count for your overall GPA but I don't know if it helps/hurts your 'science/math-specific' GPA that is calculated for ranking purposes prior to applying. I'm going to guess that if you take it prior to applying, it will only affect your overall GPA. Lecture absolutely counts for both- overall and science/math GPAs.

Hello All,

Has any of you taken the ATI TEAS? I just took it and I am a bit worried I did not do well enough. I got an over all score of 72% I ran out of time in the reading and and the language usage scoring around 60% on both, I got an 81% on the math and a 92% on the science. I am so worry it is not good enough because my nursing GPA is a 3.1.

Congrats on the science section! It seems like that is the most difficult part for almost everyone. If it's your first attempt, you still have another chance before May 1 to take it again, as long as it's 30 days after your first try. Since you know you will struggle in reading and language, maybe try to find resources (either written or Youtube or whatever works best for you) to learn a little bit more each day.

One of the previous posters, currently in the program, said it's basically impossible to know what is good enough because no one knows how many people are actually applying. But if it's your first attempt, you always have another shot.

Hi all, I took the TEAS yesterday and scored an 86.7%. I feel so relieved, I had a couple of technical difficulties while taking the exam through Proctorio. It was a nightmare for me, they logged me out twice while taking the exam for no apparent reason, but I'm glad it's all over.

Congrats, 86 is a solid score! I just sent in my application so I’m hoping that my 81%  TEAS score is enough LOL. Which option are you guys applying for? I applied for generic full time and part time.
