MDC *Generic F/T* Fall 2011 ;-D

U.S.A. Florida

hi and congrats to all of us! i made this thread so we could all exhange info for out ft cohort. that way we won't get mixed up with the other p/timers and ao track! congrats to them too!

for those who are just tuning in:

  • our orientation is july 18th, the ati assessment is july 19. mark your calendars!
  • we do need to get titers for 2 tb's, mmr, varicella and hep b is highly suggested! i think hep a too!
  • the program is 4 semesters. we graduate in december 2012!!!!!!:yeah::yeah::yeah:
  • we have to turn in all our paper work for orientation, which includes our drug screen, health record, background check(i think they receive this from the actually company though)
  • make your ati account!!! atitesting.com

what i have left to do:

  • get my drug screen and 2nd tb! should go tomorrow.
  • uhhh all my titers actually
  • my unform--although i've already gotten my skirt for clinicals (don't wear pants), i don't have the top or lab coat!!!
  • get my books-- i've gotten supplementals like an nclex book and stuff but not the actual texts.

what i have done to get ready:

  • i am going on a diet! healthy meals all day! i don't want to gain 10+ lbs--don't like the idea of being an unhealthy nurse lol
  • going over some, but not all a&p--mostly bones, muscles, heart, endocrine, and stuff like that.
  • cleaning out my room to make more space.
  • i got an extra desk--its big and spacious for those late night study sessions. i have another one but its small. mostly for the computer. but it has lots of shelves for my "enjoyment books".
  • i am cleaning my shelves(i have lots) and organizing the books by subject (anatomy, physio, patho, bio, chemistry, dictionaries, etc) and as time goes by, i'll put the nursing books as follows: (fundamentals, health assessments, pharmacology, patho, medsurge, specialties, references/dictionaries, review books)
  • i'm cleaning my filing cabinet out but i am making copies of all my important documents, including my health record incase mdc loses it, lol. so i'll have files for my health docs, extra copies of my other valuable docs(house docs, car docs, insurance etc), and drug screen results. i'm also going to keep file of my ap notes. this is all for simplicity!!!
  • i'm going to buy those under-bed storage bins to store my extras-- extra back packs, extra office supplies, and my sewing supplies(yes i love crafts)
  • make sure my dental appointments and my dog's shots are up to date!!!
  • i printed a ton of "grocery list/menu planner" sheets. i am going to put it on a magnetic clipboard and put it on my white board. every week or month i am going to pick out a day just for meal planning and grocery shopping. i am going to work it out so that the first semester i only have to go shopping twice a month. most of my meals, if they turn out alright lol, will be freezer meals.
  • i think i need to buy a mini freezer lol
  • i'm going to do all my fun stuff before school starts. i want to go to the zoo and see some museums and other geeky stuff with my mum. might not be able to for a while :crying2:

what other misc stuff are you doing to organize your life? i *love* organizing :redbeathe any tips would be great!!!!!can't wait :D :yeah::nurse::redbeathe:eek::p:rolleyes::D:clown:

Thanks for such a great answer boot2.

3. I don't know exactly what type of traps youre talking about... if you clarify I would love to answer!

I guess I meant like a bad habit to fall into, or something to watch out for that could easily trip us up. But your answer was amazing and addressed everything I could think of. Thanks!

So I've decided to try and go through with the program kinda at the last minute...i still need to get my background check done or they will drop me from my classes and I have my appointment for Monday. I was wondering how long it took to get your background checks done? The paper says 48 to 72 hours I hope that is true... Also has anyone else's degree audit changed?

Yay!!!! So glad to hear you are going through with it.

Yep my degree audit changed about 3wks ago. as for the background check, i don't know what to tell you.... =/

has anyone else's degree audit changed?

I'm afraid to know what that even is. I remember when Dawn mentioned it at orientation. If it has something to do with how our transferred units are evaluated all over again, then I'll freak out. Last time they automatically dis-enrolled me after claiming I had never even taken remedial math. :uhoh3:

Please share any study tools or accessories that you like. I've used a book stand in the past but it never held the book at the best angle. Last week I got a new one and in my opinion it is perfect and totally adjustable. I highly recommend this product if you want a good book stand: IHD-105 Transparent Book Stand

I tried to find something like a cheap paper mannequin cut-out to practice assessments on but I couldn't find anything. The real mannequins are ridiculously expensive.

I went to IKEA and bought lights that you stick underneath shelves. I put it on the shelf above my desk to save desk space. :-)

I like OneNote from Microsoft--you can send powerpoints to it and type right on the slides. I like this to save paper. BTW I got a cute netbook for my bday so I am going to use this in class! yipee

Well I am going to go clean my room! I will be thinking of other ideas. Thanks for the book stand idea. We have little wooden ones in the library. BTW I think we can make appointments to the skills lab if we ever need to practice on them. =)

Thanks for the tips. I can't believe I've never used OneNote before. I just checked it out and it looks fantastic. I have a low attention span and almost never go back over the notes I take in class because they are so dry and boring. It looks like with OneNote you can combine notes with photos, sound files, videos, and other media. I love stuff that is interactive so I don't go into a sleep coma.

LOL I am the same way about notes. That is why I like ppts a lot. I don't plan to print my notes now that I will use the netbook in class. It will help save money for sure =D

Yep I love that I can record the lecture right on the program. Its sooo awesome for organizing bc the tabs and you can search through tons of notebooks using tags.... super coolbeansss

Great idea with the lights! I ordered the book stand as I have never had one and have always wanted one - I didn't know which one to get, so it was great to have someone's opinion. I have to get going on organizing my room some more - especially the closets! Good luck with the cleaning !:):clown:

BOOT2

Thank you so much for your input.

As a graduate of MDC RN school, your input is very much appreciated.

we are definitely on the final countdown....

RN school starts in 7 days

And I'm not feeling rested at all.

You guys have probably already seen this, but the site for the Medical Dosage textbook has a better Appendix A pdf (with many problems worked out) than the one in the back of the book. So you can have that open on the computer (or print out) and verify your answers without having to keep flipping to the back of the book.

*I linked to a site that allows you to "view" the pdf (because I didn't know how to link to the file inside the Pearson site - I think you have to register). It's a lot larger and crisper if you choose "save" at the top of the ZohoViewer page and then open the original pdf on your computer.
