MDC *Generic F/T* Fall 2011 ;-D

Published

hi and congrats to all of us! i made this thread so we could all exhange info for out ft cohort. that way we won't get mixed up with the other p/timers and ao track! congrats to them too!

for those who are just tuning in:

  • our orientation is july 18th, the ati assessment is july 19. mark your calendars!
  • we do need to get titers for 2 tb's, mmr, varicella and hep b is highly suggested! i think hep a too!
  • the program is 4 semesters. we graduate in december 2012!!!!!!:yeah::yeah::yeah:
  • we have to turn in all our paper work for orientation, which includes our drug screen, health record, background check(i think they receive this from the actually company though)
  • make your ati account!!! atitesting.com

what i have left to do:

  • get my drug screen and 2nd tb! should go tomorrow.
  • uhhh all my titers actually
  • my unform--although i've already gotten my skirt for clinicals (don't wear pants), i don't have the top or lab coat!!!
  • get my books-- i've gotten supplementals like an nclex book and stuff but not the actual texts.

what i have done to get ready:

  • i am going on a diet! healthy meals all day! i don't want to gain 10+ lbs--don't like the idea of being an unhealthy nurse lol
  • going over some, but not all a&p--mostly bones, muscles, heart, endocrine, and stuff like that.
  • cleaning out my room to make more space.
  • i got an extra desk--its big and spacious for those late night study sessions. i have another one but its small. mostly for the computer. but it has lots of shelves for my "enjoyment books".
  • i am cleaning my shelves(i have lots) and organizing the books by subject (anatomy, physio, patho, bio, chemistry, dictionaries, etc) and as time goes by, i'll put the nursing books as follows: (fundamentals, health assessments, pharmacology, patho, medsurge, specialties, references/dictionaries, review books)
  • i'm cleaning my filing cabinet out but i am making copies of all my important documents, including my health record incase mdc loses it, lol. so i'll have files for my health docs, extra copies of my other valuable docs(house docs, car docs, insurance etc), and drug screen results. i'm also going to keep file of my ap notes. this is all for simplicity!!!
  • i'm going to buy those under-bed storage bins to store my extras-- extra back packs, extra office supplies, and my sewing supplies(yes i love crafts)
  • make sure my dental appointments and my dog's shots are up to date!!!
  • i printed a ton of "grocery list/menu planner" sheets. i am going to put it on a magnetic clipboard and put it on my white board. every week or month i am going to pick out a day just for meal planning and grocery shopping. i am going to work it out so that the first semester i only have to go shopping twice a month. most of my meals, if they turn out alright lol, will be freezer meals.
  • i think i need to buy a mini freezer lol
  • i'm going to do all my fun stuff before school starts. i want to go to the zoo and see some museums and other geeky stuff with my mum. might not be able to for a while :crying2:

what other misc stuff are you doing to organize your life? i *love* organizing :redbeathe any tips would be great!!!!!can't wait :D :yeah::nurse::redbeathe:eek::p:rolleyes::D:clown:

Thanks guys for the iPod advice! I liked when they had 16gb.... it seemed just right! 32gb seems too much and 8gb, I thought, was too little, but it just might be enough. =) I already have another ipod with my music and all, so I won't really put music on the itouch. Mmmm I did want to put my lectures on it, but I guess I could always just erase them at the end of the semester!

Does anyone here live near FIU? I'd love to have someone to study or review with on weekends @ SpecialTEA Lounge on 107th ave and Coral Way.... they are open til 1am and have cheap tea/coffee/paninis  oh & free wifi...

I can't deal with Starbucks' high costs. Plus I never find a seat -_-

I don't live by FIU, but I would love to get together and study there :) It sounds perfect!

Pixiemom,

THANKS a bunch for that link. http://socialcompare.com/en/comparis...ons-comparison

Of course, today, I can't find that apple store link that I swear said the 3rd generation had video recording capability. arrgggh.. maybe it was a 3rd party website I ended up at ... with inaccurate info?!

Yipee =) it is! It has couches and all. Very nice place. The only thing that will kill me is that they have REALLY good baked stuff... like chocolate chip cookie dulce de leche stuffed sanwiches LOL!

The 3rd gen doesn't have vid recording =/ only the 4th.... btw i think we get student discounts here http://store.apple.com/us_edu_460440

I'd also look at amazon.com for a 3rd gen ipod touch! i think that is where i am going to get it.

On Eagles Wings,

I just called the local Apple store. They only carry the 4th generation. I was told 4th gen. came out a year ago! So I think the link you gave for student discounts ... the apple store... is only 4th gen, too! I'm trying Target, too. Looks like my best bet is amazon.com !!! I'd rather buy in person... c'est la vie.

Oh, by the way... another person who blogged... who said to "transfer the CD (comes with the "drug guide" textbook) to ipod/iphone concurs with what another student told me. So, maybe between medscape.com and the CD that comes with textbook, might be able to avoid the annual fee with unbound medicine (nursing central).

Another classmate mentioned "skyscape" to me. And I read about a really unhappy "unbound medicine" user on allnurses.com even to the point where unbound medicine replied on allnurses.com to this user. What I'm saying is this... seems like there are various choices to acquire the 3 items that are good to have in a portable device.

3 items good to have on portable electronic device:

Tabers medical dictionary

Drug Guide for nurses

Davis' comprehensive laboratory diagnostic tests with nursing apps

possible SOURCES for these 3 items:

unboundmedicine.com

skyscape.com

medscape.com

CD's that come with textbooks

As always, I appreciate your input on our common issues/topics.

also, I'm hoping that you don't have to be connected to internet when you are looking at these applications that work with ipod touch and/or iphone. Anyone who can comment about this? Maybe with an iphone the answer is "yes" and with iPod Touch the answer is "no"? I want the info in an easy-to-carry, portable format. I don't want to be reliant on internet access at the moment I'm looking up data. Why? Because wifi & internet access is not always readily available.

I bought the nursing central finally after reading the comments on other sites and on this site specifically:

https://allnurses.com/mobile-computing-nursing/anyone-purchase-nursing-526928.html

You don't need a connection to the internet - only if you want to update your information (such as when new drug gets added to the formulary). I update it occasionally. I will update it every day when I get home as soon as we begin school to keep up with any additions to diseases and medications. What I like, too, is that I have read that with the Disease and Diagnose app in nursing central, you have a large part of your nursing plan already spelled out for you. It also has a section on the latest articles from medical journals along with the complete citations. It also has an app to make up the flash cards as well.

Pixiemom,

Yep, I had read that link before - thanks for the reminder. I reread it.

Here is the link I was talking about the person that was unhappy with unbound medicine.

https://allnurses.com/mobile-computing-nursing/skyscape-vs-unbound-268598.html

Naturally you can't go by just one person's rant. Sometimes people vent when they are frustrated.

If I end up with unbound medicine vs. skyscape, epocrates, medscape, or other resources,

at least I'm going in with my eyes open.

I liked the fact that Skyscape's webpage seemed tech support oriented: 24/7/365. But maybe that is some sort of BS advertisement... meaning that you can email them 24/7/365. LOL. And they will respond when they can! LOL. You have to figure unbound medicine is paying attention to their customers when they blogged back to the person who was unhappy about their product (unbound medicine)... that certainly impressed me.

I want to revise my earlier recommendation for the flashcard apps. The two I listed, gFlash and MentalCase, were the ones I had used in the past. I spent several hours last night looking at other ones and trying to figure out the best. There are so many out there it kind of fried my mind - each with different features. My conclusion is to check several out on iTunes doing a search for "flashcards" because in my opinion the 'best' depends on if you want to study on an iPod, iPad, or the computer. So all I am saying is not to limit your choices to just the two apps I originally cited.

You don't even need an iPod either because several of the programs synch to FlashcardExchange and Quizlet (which are both free and can be used on PC or Mac). Here is an example of how cool these sites are: In the back of the Medical Dosage Calc book (p381) there is a list of common medical abbreviations. Someone already made those into flashcards back in 2008, so you can add them to your account without even spending a minute typing the stuff in.

Zaptastic,

That's so cool that it's already made! I bet with just some research we can find a whole lot of other sets of cards that we can find applicable to our studies in particular. Thank you for the research and iTunes idea - will be checking it out soon! :):nurse:
