Hey everyone!

Thought I would start a thread where we can keep up with all the fun new and exciting things coming our way! We'll get to meet each other in a few days (May 20th)! So, how shall we identify ourselves to one another? Hum...

Anyway, look forward to meeting you all! I'm excited about the Nursing Orientation!

The bookstore lists Mosby's Medical Dictionary as required, but it isn't listed as required on the book list we got in the mail.

Is it required or isn't it?? LOL

I've noticed the same thing with more than one book. Has anyone got their Clinical calculations book yet? I was wondering if the cd is the one that comes with the book or if there is an extra one attached to it.

I got the book and it just has a CD in the front cover, nothing else.

I havent gotten Mosby's Dictionary yet or the APA Manual. I figure most of the APA stuff is available online or I can find the manual used.

Hahaha, MCC nursing students are the best!!! Just reading these boards take me back and make me short of breath. Seriously I wish you all well, I graduated back in Oct. 2006 (IT CAN BE DONE). The instructors demand a lot, but are eagar to teach to those who put forth the effort. Take care of one and other, you'll need each other.

A couple of recommendations:

  • Find a like-minded study buddy if you haven't already :smiley_ab
  • Tape record your lectures (I wish someone told me this from day one). Then rewrite your notes.:up:
  • Stick with a small group for study sessions: 2-3 ppl. My study buddy and I would burn the midnight oil studying over the phone. Helped save me from failing.
  • PDAs helped me immensely through RN school but I never use mine now that I'm a nurse.
  • Learn how to do care plans from the get go...channel Carpenito. :) Care plans are tedious but do have a purpose, they will help you to learn how to critically think. Don't think of them as horrible or else you will actually die :chuckle
  • If you have test anxiety, start getting over it...they never stop hitting you with tests. :banghead: Take them in stride, and know they are NOT indicative of how smart you are!
  • Don't just memorize. Visualize. If you know and can picture how each body system works normally verbatem, you'll be able to figure out what will happen if something is pathologically wrong. (i.e. if you understand how the heart works normally, you'll be able to visualize when there is something like mitral valve regurgitation goin on, and know what assessment findings you will need to find (lung sounds, heart sounds, pulse ox, objective and subjective data), what treatments you'll be giving). It will stick with you better than just straight up memorization....trust me!!!!!!!!! THIS IS KEY: KNOW THE NORMAL FUNCTION BEFORE YOUR LECTURES...seriously, study like you need to know it for test and you'll totally understand the lectures and it will save you time later.
  • Get to know your instructors...they're awesome. If you're a go-getter, or was shy like me :imbar, get involved with your MCCSNA...it will help you with job opportunities and will help stuff your resume for when you need a job. (It's getting tougher out there). It helped me get where I am today.
  • Ask for a reference after most clinical rotations. It again, helps with getting a job, either as a Nurse Assistant and eventually Tech.

If you ever have any questions, just ask. These are just some tips that helped me through nursing school. Great memories but it sure as hell was a lot of work. I really think Macomb churns out the best nurses. When it comes to nursing, MCC gets it...pretty much have a 100% pass rate on the NCLEX. Soon your faces will be up on the wall of fame upstairs :cool:. Best of luck!!!!!

I'm glad to hear of the positive experiences you had and I am getting so excited, I can't stand it! I am going to get my books tomorrow as long as the bookstore has my NWLB account set up. Wow, it's really getting close!

I am thinking of calling and finding out when the info packet will be mailed to the Oct. start. I will be working for a few weeks and don't want to miss something, or not schedule something correctly and find out I'm too late to get tests done, get my CPR, etc....

while it is important to be able to network, everyone should be mindful of the following:

  1. it is a small world - when we narrow it down to a state and throw in some personal info, there is actually a pretty good chance someone may recognize you if you are not careful. your privacy is paramount to us.
  2. while allnurses.com is a wonderful place to vent (without excess personally identifiable details) it is not the place to express why ("x" specific person, place or program) is terrible. gripe away, but since we cannot permit allegations to be made about named entities, your care in not naming them is very much appreciated.
  3. please do not give out personal information about others. do not name names where anyone could identify the person in any facility including your nursing programs.

Yep will do! I stopped in the Nursing Bldg and wanted to go into the Nursing Lounge, but it was close. I didn't see who I was looking for, so I will call or e-mail them tomorrow if I get a chance. I ended up at the bookstore, as my NWLB account was active. They will not give you the Nurse Packs until you are on a "list". They will not give Oct. start people them now. They said to come back about a week or so before classes start for Oct. I also brought a large suitcase to the bookstore. Thanks CorazondeOro! LOL. They were right there are a very LARGE amount of books. They were missing one required book. So I will say that with the Nurse Pack and the missing book, the cost for 1500 books is around $800 for those interested.

Hey Nell, that would be great to post the info if you get a moment :) I held it in my hand for one brief second before they took it away from me. Ha! I should have opened it and looked inside. It is in a white draw string bag, and it was pretty full from what I remember....

The Nurse Pack contains the following:

1 Set of Sony headphones

1 Pen light

and here is the "fun" stuff::yeah:

1 Foley Catheterization Tray

1 Tracheostomy Clean and Care Tray

1 Central Line Dressing Change Tray

1 Suction Catheter Kit with a whistle tip catheter, vinyl gloves, sterlile wrap and pop up cup

2 0.9% sodium chloride injection USP ( IV bag)

2 continu-flo solution set ( IV tubing?)

1 secondary medication set ( more IV stuff I think)

alcohol swabsticks

about 4 different hypodermic needles

sterile towel drape

gloves

2 sterile ABD pads extra absorbent

maybe a dozen 4 X 4 gauze pads

some tape

some sterile water for injection

2 small items very well wrapped in bubble wrap- no idea whats in there
