MCC nursing applicants for 2015

Published

Hello everyone!

I've been obsessively reading over the threads for the 2013 and 2014 applicants, but I thought I'd see if anyone will be applying to the Nursing program at Macomb Community College for 2015. I am a transfer student from Texas and will be taking A&P this summer then intro to Nursing (since MCC requires that you take their specific course) and micro in the Fall. I'm so excited to get back into school and was wondering if anyone is following along the same timeline.

This was an actual question on my reading comprehension. I remember it, because I thought "This has nothing to do with comprehension." It was my first question and then it went downhill from there.

The paragraph was about the tradition White Elephant. It mentioned ONE TIME that it started in a country called Siam (??), which is now called Tailand. The first question was "Where is Tailand? ". Mind you, I knew where it was, but I couldn't help but think this is not geography.

@jesster1414 I got the same question!! In my head I was like this is related to reading comprehension how...? It didn't even mention anything about that in the paragraph. So redundant.

Right? Glad I wasn't the only one who thought that.

And that is what kind of bothers me about this hesi exam. I understand that nursing will revolve around comprehending and critical thinking. But how will the "reading comprehension" section of the hesi determine our skills? Another thing about the hesi that bothers me is the anatomy section only had 30 questions while every other section had 55...why??? If someone were to take a anatomy course recently, then it might not even be an issue. But it's been a couple of years for me and having such a huge in depth topic have only 30 question is kind of a really really small sample of info that you may or may not remember because you studied literally everything else in anatomy. Lastly, I know the hesi exam is added in our ranks to help with the large amount of competition in entering the nursing program but there are some people out there, like me, that don't do well in LARGE exams such as the hesi. I deal with test anxiety, especially for a test where whatever you answer is done and can't change after or a test that you only have one shot at per year. That doesn't add enough pressure or anything to the overly nervous student who really wants to get in the nursing program. *sigh* sorry for the rant, just needed to say it since we were kind of touching on this subject

Rach, I totally understand! I actually did really well in anatomy and physiology (in the class). When I studied it, I was getting everything right when I quizzed myself over and over using many different tools other than the book. Then when it came to the HESI, that was the other category that I did poor in. I felt so dumb.

Yep! And that is exactly what happened to me too Jesster. I studied over and over again to refresh my memory and I love anatomy above all other subjects. But I don't enjoy getting thrown random questions to answer on the hesi. That's why I don't understand why they use the hesi as a valid way of ranking us. When everyone is different.

Surprisingly, anatomy saved my ass with the highest score and studied the least. It makes nooo sense!! Does anyone know of anybody elses scores applying with us that has not posted on here?

I honestly thought that the A&P questions were pretty generalized and only touched base on topics. Everyone has their weak and strong points!

I'm sure they take different tests and pull questions out of a large bank. Either that, or I just studied the wrong material. I don't really know how much better I could have studied for Anatomy and Physiology. The reading comprehension I admit I could have studied more on, but I wasn't exactly sure how to.

There def is something more to calculating these composite scores, as others have mentioned. I have gone through previous years of posts reading what everyone got in with or alternates, and I came to the conclusion that somehow the hesi weighs more. For example, how did someone with a 3.33 gpa and 90 hesi make 6th alternate, and someone with 3.517 and 86 hesi make 14th alternate, when the one with the 3.33 and 90 had an overall lower average?? Look at posts from previous years, and do all the calculations and you will see it doesnt make sense at all. Im just outright confused.

It might not be the hesi that weights more, but something about the total composite score definitely doesnt make sense

Hesi doesn't weigh more. I'm 100% positive. It's just hard to grasp the numbers. But HESI and GPA are weighed exactly 50% each.
