Math rage

Published

Is it just me or does anyone else find the math classes you have to take like algebra completely and totally a waste of time and money? I asked a RN the other day if she had ever needed to factor a polynomial at work, and she chuckled and said no. I just find myself completely and utterly disenfranchised with the whole college system right now. *end rant*

Wait, wait , wait.... you mean to tell me, that I will not be using imaginary numbers in nursing??!!??

Nope - Payroll does that when calculating your paycheck.

I just finished taking my easy math class gec. I am also to take stats courses.

You won't believe some of the students I see trying to get into nursing (or already are in nursing school) who can't do basic math. Would you want a nurse who couldn't do simple arithmetic? I certainly wouldn't, as nursing requires some mathematical skill. Even more advanced if you want to become a CRNA like many nursing students.

It seems like everyone you ask at my school what their major is, nine times out of ten its nursing. Some of the people at my school, I look at and say (to myself) "God help me if you become a nurse."

College algebra I support making students take. Anything higher I'd say is a waste of money. I use formulas all the time in algebra and it is helpful to know the basics.

There is value, but I understand the frustration when learning a new subject.

I love math...my heart skips a beat when I get to solve a new equation

So you're asserting that nurses shouldn't be required to have maths skills beyond the 5th grade?

As I said, sad.

You are clearly taking this beyond context and what the OP meant. :poop:

Thank you!

Your pile of poop notwithstanding...

The OP did not state this explicitly but this is the logical conclusion from his/her posts.

The OP first complained about the requirement for algebra and also asserted that s/he considered it unnecessary. The OP then stated his/her comfort with, and the merit of, basic math operations such as addition/subtraction, multiplication/division, and fractions-to-decimals... that is, 5th grade math.

So, you can scoop up your little poop pile and deposit it elsewhere.

One can infer quite alot from online boards. However what you inferred was utterly and completely WRONG. This post started out as a rant against algebra, but then turned into "me" apparently saying that nurses only needed a 5th math level. Which I did not. You did take what I said out of context. I am quite comfortable with 5th grade math as I have passed that class. I was trying to see the value of all these astronomically crazy formulas, and instead of trying to help me, things were posted that were inflammatory and some were down right rude. I was trying to blow off some steam and I get people attacking me for my opinion, which is what to expect from an anonymous online board. But someone trying to a mountain out of a molehill for something that was wrongly inferred, I was not expecting that. Naive? Maybe, but I thought that I could find some camaraderie here. But in other words, please don't speak saying what you think I am trying to say or "assert", and if you don't have anything nice to say dont say anything at all.

Hahaha I feel the exact same way but almost all of those people don't end up making it into the program. (At least at my school)
