It's a mind thing. All you have to do is study. I took pre-calculus instead of college math b/c i wasn't sure if i wanted to pursue nursing or pharmacy school. Well the truth of the matter is that I had a weak professor. She could not teach. So I sought after tutoring and studied on my own. It was hard! The whole class struggled but I got through by the grace of God. I got a C. But she taught me if you really want something you are going to have to work hard for it. TALK about a professor who had no teaching skills. She taught everything the hard way and could not break it down. Plus she only gave examples already written out in the book.
How can you be good at science and not math? My hardest math class was chemistry. I hated doing all those calculations,steps, and putting in formulas, manipulating formulas to fit special cases,etc. I suggest you take CHEMISTRY as a determining factor if you can handle the other math included in Nursing. Or go for an ADN program so you don't have to take statistics and other math & extra science classes that include more math.
WOW:idea: Math is also my worst subject and that is what has held me back from going back to college!!! I have wanted to become a nurse for so long but I feared math so much that I was scared of failing and looking dumb:uhoh21: It has been 10 years since I was in college and now I am back in college ready to study, study, study until I finally get into nursing school and become a Registered Nurse:specs:Math seems a little less scary since I have found this webiste. All of your posts have given me the guts to try my best and to ask for help if I need it, your posts have answered all the questions that I wanted to ask about math and nursing, thank you sooooooo much!!! Just practice practice practice, get a tutor, do 100 problems, do another 100 problems. Let math become your friend, it's universal and used every where. Even a little bit of a wrong dosage can kill someone. Take Chemistry 101 and it will probably set you up to medical math.
Oh I begin solving problems in medical math and it's nothing compared to Chemistry and Physics conversations because it goes very very deep, so your pretty lucky.
Chemistry and Physics are real science to my chemistry professor's =/. That quote changed my life. I use to hate math with a passion, but in the end I said "no more". I did well with Pre calc and Organic chemistry after hearing that quote. Getting A's in both. I also found that Calculus 1 is like baby math to math majors. I guess there is alway something harder like linear algebra, Stat based Calculus and Calculus 3. There are also Physical Chemistry, Calculus based physics and Qua chemistry and Qua math. Thank God I dont have to touch them.

I had a friend the other day tell me that nurses have to figure out medical related word problems. And I said; So your telling me that a doctor will send orders down and he will say here is the Meds im perscribing for the patient, there administerd based on the weight of the patient, but im not going tell you how much the patient weighs! You will have to create a equation to figure it out. And she tried to tell me in responce; Yes they do. thats nonsense. Just remember, as a Nurse you have the patients records, how much he or she weighs and everything. Doctors, contrary to what my friend asserted, do not send half ?%& orders.

YOu literally can NOT do nuring without algebra.
Now, Algebra and GEometry were as far as I went.
