Master's degree

Published

Does anyone have their master's degree? I would get a pretty sizable pay increase if I got my master's, but I would want to get it in school nursing and it is difficult to find such a program.

I am currently working on my bachelors so I can then do a certified school nurse program. That will be a big bump in pay.

If I had that opportunity, I would.

My Master's? I'm not interested enough to pursue, and if I did I would leave SN and maybe do Psych since my BA is in Psych.

Mostly though? My kids are headed to/already in school, and I don't have the $$$.

This is their time now.

What a refreshing statement to hear nowadays.

Specializes in School Nurse, Pediatrics, Surgical.

I keep going back and forth on going back to school for my master's. But like others I have 2 kids, one is 9 and in private school and already has plans to continue to the high school private school and that is a large increase. We are also planning on the 1 year old to start at the private school in kinder. PLUS I am part time this year so no extra money in the future to spend on me.

Got mine in Health Care Administration. 18 mo, 4- 9 credit classes. all on line. Almost 1/2 paid by school, sizable raise (more into retirement)...Glad I did it, not just for the $$ but @ 49, it was time to exercise the gray matter. I have used it (the knowledge from the course work) actually a lot more than I had anticipated.

Truthfully, it was personal goal more than a professional goal.

Oh, yea. As you all have seen, my brain is oatmeal.

It's the only way I will make any money as a school nurse. I want to stay in the school system for the schedule and retirement benefits. Certified positions pay on the teacher pay scale which is 22% higher than what I make now.

My kids are in elementary school. There is no way I will be able to afford paying for college for the 3 of them. Right now all they have is a single mom who is exhausted from working 2 jobs and staying up late to worry about money (ex husband does not work or pay any child support). They will benefit immensely in a few years by having a mom who can be less stressed and more present.

Absolutely.

What I meant was, a degree won't help me in my position at all. HH doesn't even care that I don't have my BSN, because of my experience.

My going back to school is not cost effective for me or mine right now.

Wish they would recognize and pay for more education!

This applies to me as well. I got my MSN-Education last year. I got it through WGU, all online, for just over $7K. The pay raise I got will make up for that in just two years. I felt like it was worth it due to that factor, as well as it opening up doors otherwise if I decide to get out of school nursing at some point. Not that I think that's very likely, but I figure it's always good to have options!

What school is this? I am young in the school nurse world, and don't have kids of my own yet, so I figure if I'm going to do it, now is the best time. I am on the same pay scale as the teachers, so the added degree gives a nice pay bump - with many years ahead of me, it would be worth it. There is a program in Boston (I am in the Northeast) which is partially online, but also partially on campus during the summer. I work in the summer to supplement my SN salary, so if I can find an online program it would be ideal for me.
