Anyone ever work in either Hopkins ED or Cowley Shock Trauma's MICU? I am planning on relocating to the area and have recently been offered two positions to DIE for and having an incredible time choosing between them....

I am looking for anyone with any insight into the facilities to give a little advice as to issues, difficulties or positive aspects to either facility.

Thanks!

Not close enough to be able to weigh in, but man, am I jealous! You will make the right choice, I am sure!

In this job market I think the OP is just rubbing it in!

I have a friend from nursing school that works at Hopkins on the stepdown unit and LOVES it. I'd personally kill to work at Hopkins myself. Working at Shock Trauma is an amazing opportunity as well. Honestly the ER and MICU are two completely different environments so I'd maybe think about which one I'd rather do. And seriously, count your stars because whichever one you go with will be awesome!

If you don't have a unit preference I'd go with whoever is paying more! They both tend to think that their fancy reputation is pay enough compared to other hospitals pay rates in the area but they do offer excellent educational opportunities. Congratulations and welcome. There are good nursing opportunities in the Balto/DC area.

Where are you coming from? Rural, Urban, City, Small Town? Many come to Baltimore and find that it isn't for them because of the INNER CITY ENVIRONMENT. Are you a well seasoned nurse or new grad who's never been away from friends and family. Will you have a support system in town? All these considerations should go into your decision making process. I came from Philly to Hopkins 25 years ago and it was "Culture Shock" even though I worked in a Large Medical School affiliated Teaching Hospital in the Inner City. Baltimore is just VERY different than other places.

I've worked in both facilities, not ER at Hopkins but OR, PACU, IMCU, Transplant, Oncology. Worked UMMC and Shock Trauma. Both are inner city, trauma no longer is "TRUE" trauma, but now includes the "knife and gun club" gang as well. As a previous poster noted, both facilities have the attitude that you are lucky to be working there. Now that UMMC has achieved "Magnet" status they are much more uppity. VP of Nursing at UMMC came from Hopkins and brought their mileu with her, so either will be the same. Hopkins is a "TOUGH" ER gig. I've done ER since the 1970's and would NEVER do it at either Hopkins or UMMC. Good Luck in your decision making. Let us know how it works for you.

very true. it was even a bit of a culture shock for me to go from being a tech at a community hospital in the suburbs to being in a hospital that's actually in the city now.

Azriel- I work at a Level 1 Trauma Center in a neurosurgery step down unit as a first year RN, BSN. I worked at an inner city hospital in St. Louis in the Trauma ICU for 2 and half years in nursing school as a nurse assistant and LOVED IT! I moved back to to Chicago to be by family when I graduated but I would do anything, include relocate, to work at UMMC Shock Trauma. I just applied this weekend, any suggestions for getting in with HR? Which one did you end up choosing?

Two choice offers. Good luck and think twice.

Which one has more opportunity for advancement? Were you able to sample the work environment of both?
