U.S.A. Arizona

Hi everyone so I got placed in scottsdale for spring 2016, Im wondering any block 2 or 3 or even graduates that can tell me if I should buy every single book they have on the list? its like 10 books and honestly I just feel its too many of them and that ill be waisting money by buying them, its almost $1,000 for all 10, and I don't mind spending the money if I will be using them, my options are to rent them but I will like to buy the ones I will be using more than one semester.

Any feed back will help thank you!!

This is the list:

Fundamentals of nursing volume 1 & 2

Davis drug guide

Taker's cyclopedic medical dictionary

Essentials of psychiatric mental health nursing

Nursing diagnosis handbook: a evidence based guide to planning care

Calculate with confidence

Medical surgical nursing assessment and management of clinical problems

Pharmacology for nurses: a pathophysiological approach

Pearson handbook of laboratory and diagnostic testing with nursing implications

Manual of nursing practice

I'm finishing up block 1 right now. The only books I really used during block 1 were the fundamentals book and the drug guide. The Med-surg book was only helpful when I was studying Diabetes.

Everyone recommends getting them all, which I did, because you will use them in other blocks.

The med/surg book is a definite must for block 2 and up. Most of the assigned reading comes from that book. The lippincott doesnt get much assigned reading, but I personally liked it for careplans. It lays out the patho of each disease process in a way I liked. Other people preferred the med/surg or the tabers for that. So that part really is left up to you to find out which one you like better. The nursing diagnoses book is a must for all the blocks. All of your diagnosing will come out of that and it makes writing them easy because it gives the goals and interventions and rationales for them. The lab value book is also a must if you want to understand lab values as they pertain to the various disease processes. Another must is the drug guide. It really can be any drug guide that is up to date, but the one they require is good to get because all simulations will use that book for looking up drugs so its good to get used to it. I also used the davis drug guide app because it is much faster then digging through the book on the go. It will also give you access to the drug guide online so you can copy and paste the content. For the meds part of the careplans, they usually dont care if you copy/paste because there isnt really another way to word the stuff anyway. The psych book isnt really used in block 1. you will have one lecture on therapeutic communication with assigned reading from it, but I got by without even opening it. You will definitely get good use out of it when studying for mental health, which I believe is being moved from block 4 to block 2. The pharm book is great for the first semester or two as you learn the drug classes. You will use it a bit in the other blocks, but I only really studied from it for the first two. The calculate with confidence has good conversion charts and math practice. It also has good info on the insulin types that will be usueful when you learn diabetes.

As you can see, they really are good to get all of them. You will go between the various books throughout the program.

I'm starting GWC in January. Just wanted to mention that the three additional books we need (not in the bundle) are all $20 cheaper than the bookstore if you buy from Amazon. And Amazon is having a 25% off some books thing right now using the code 25OFFBOOK. I think it goes through tomorrow - Dec 16.

Wow, that's a lot of books. I'm at MCC and start Block 3 next month. For Block 1 and 2 the only required books we had were the Fundamentals 1 & 2 and Ignatavicius (Iggy”) Med-Surg book. We were required to purchase ATI as well as Skyscape. Skyscape is an app that includes medical dictionaries, drug guides, nursing diagnoses stuff. It's awesome. No other books other than that. We didn't even touch the Fundamentals books in Block 2 and no one I know has used them after Block 1. The Iggy book you will use through all 4 blocks. Other than Iggy, there's only one other book required for Block 3.

So I have enrolled, paid tuition, and bought all my books and supplies... at this point I just need my uniform and I was wondering, do we get our badges at the orientation in January?

Your badge is just your student ID. So if you don't have that you can get that from registration and then you need to buy a badge holder.

Ohhh okay I see, I thought it was a separate ID card from the student ID. Thank you :)

I thought so too, but they told us this at our orientation :)

We got a separate student ID that says student nurse on it at MCC. They ARE different than the generic ID.

Did you get it through your orientation, first day of class, or did you have to go into your school somewhere to get it?

Well that's interesting. I guess I can only speak for EMCC then. They told us there are no separate "student nurse" IDs and we are to use our regular school ID.
