I hold licences for both the states of New York, and Massachusettes. In MA, you're required to have a bunch of CEU's every TWO years to maintain licensure. Honestly?? I don't have a problem with this. With the constant advances in healthcare, there's plenty of new learning to make such requirements worth while.
Good topic! :)

Many states are already requiring these hours. If you get certified in ACLS and PALS every two years you will alomost have all of your hours. There are alwys inservices at hospitals plus specialty group meetings if you belong to any. There are CEUs available in many nursing magazines as well as on-line.
I really wouldn't worry about it...........You are probably getting more than that already.

When I worked for the federal government, we were encouraged to maintain about 20 CEUs a year and I must say that I miss it. I think that it would be a very good thing if it became mandatory in NYS to complete x-amount of CEUs every so many years. Like it was stated in an earlier post by another fellow NY nurse, health care is evcer changing and there has got to be a way to stay current and remain marketable........and keep practicing safely. Bring it on.

There are currently two bills, one in the State Senate and one in the State Assembly, which would require 45 hours of continuing education every three years to renew our licenses in New York State.
I am interested in how other NYS nurses feel about this? I know other states have been doing it.
Thank you for all replys
