mandatory continuing education

I live in Michigan and we do have mandatory CEU's, we have to have 25 in 2 years. It have been easily obtainable due to the facility were I work sponsors and helps us get them pretty easily. I did just see in our local paper were an LPN's license was put on probation and she got a $250.00 fine for not having enough CEU's when she renewed her license. So Board of Nursing does audit us!!

Does anyone know where I can obtain more than 1 or 2 ceu's at a time....I put my Ohio nursing license on the shelf and now to reactivate it I need a lot of ceu's first.

Fla requires CEU's which I think is a waste of time and money. I get all of my education from my facility anyway. Some one has a connection to the state board which has a connection to a private company that produces educational material for CEU's. I have no proof but its my bebief. My last state did not require my waste of money.

PA does not require CEUs but the hospital I work in has mandatory education classes and compentency exams that are required by the state. You must complete these courses and testing to remain on the job in the hospital. I think as long as there is some type of mandatory system to keep you up to date and check compentency it's ok. Doesn't have to be the same state to state to be effective.

Yes, CEUs should be mandatory across the board for all! It may be the only way to get "some nurses" to keep up on the growing changes in the field of nursing. I carry an active license in NC and OH. NC does not require CEUs, but OH requires 24 each renewal period for RNs. I take CEUs because I want to, and because I enjoy learning and keeping abreast on changes in nursing. Other nurses may not take extra educational courses if they are not mandated to do so, so this is why they should be mandated in every state. :)

SKYEYE here some sites where you can get CEUs online. You read the material...take the test online, and get the certificate printed out right then and there.

Also the best way to get a lot of CEUs at one time is to take a course say in ACLS=16hrs.

Just do a search by putting in CEUs, and you will find a lot of sites will come up. Once I found one where you could pay just $49.00 and takes as many as you wanted...paying nothing extra. I had the link on my webpage...but my page got deleted...while I wasn't paying attention.....when About.com stopped supporting free webpages... .. :eek:

OOPs I forgot...yes I agree Renee...Even though I look for free stuff...cause I'm cheap...:)....I definitely think CEUS should be mandatory in ALL states! Some people just need a little push to get them to keep themselves updated. And there are many travelers, agency, home health, or private duty nurses out there who MAY not have an avenue where they're given an opportunity to get themselves current. A NO nurse should be caring for pts. , teachiing or anything else, without keeping themselves updated IMHO... :cool:

In Tx an LVN has to have 20 CEs every renewal period which is 24 mos. I think it should be mandatory across the board as well.

I really don't think professionals should HAVE to keep up with continuing education--I think this is another way to police health professionals/public servants primarily because female dominated. Rarely is this a topic of discussion for male dominated fields ie., ambulance workers, fire fighters, police men, etc. (And this coming from someone who has taken extensive cont ed. couses). Many professionals are very happy with their knowledge base and skills learned on the job and that is good to meet their working needs...there is nothing wrong with that. For others of us, curiosity to learn more and in many cases the need to learn more to ensure employment will dictate how much we need to take. I think it's an individual decision altogether. What do you think?
