I just started my first rotation (LTC) 3 weeks ago, and from the beginning I've been getting seriously bad vibes from one young woman in particular. I don't understand why she has to hate. Is it because she feels that men are encroaching in on one of the last female-dominated fields and trying to take that away from her? I try to make it known that I have a girlfriend and am not in the program just to meet girls. I am here for one reason alone: to learn as much as possible to be the absolute best nurse that I can be.
Normally I wouldn't let this get to me, but I swear she's trying to set me up all the time. Trying to point out my flaws and weaknesses in front of the instructors, spreading rumors to other students - and other stupid high-school things of that nature.
Does anyone else experience this crap? I know that I have to just be bigger than that, but it's really distracting me from learning at my best. I'm just looking for some wisdom...
Sorry to nag, but I've got to vent somewhere... :angryfire
I'm not trying to bash on women. Lord knows I love the ladies - all of them. Nothing but respect and admiration for them (although I've lost respect for the one mentioned in the above post). I just wanted to make that clear. :)

hey, go ahead and let it out! That is what I find great about this site. it is a SHAME that gender stereotyping goes on in our world yet today. My advice, ignore her and "be all that you can be", heck, in 5 years, she isn't going to remember you, or you her, unless of course it is to think " I wish she could see me now". I know it must be very frustating, but do not divulge into her distraction tecniques..keep a going, ignore her

Be mellow, centered on what you're doing and remember, it's her problem not yours.
Learn all that you can and remember that your instructor is checking with the nurses you work with to see how you're doing. It is hard, I know, but like everything, you will get through it.
As for venting, go for it! It has to come out sometime!
Good Luck!

Maybe she is jealous because you are doing better than her. If she is acting like she is still in high school, she probably still gets jealous over stupid things like that.
Instead of pointing out your flaws to everyone, I'd want to help you. Instead of being jealous of you being better at nursing than I am, I'd want you to help me.
Just do you best, ignore her as much as possible, and prove you have what it takes.
Some women deal with the same thing in a typical "man's" occupation, so it's understandable that it would happen to a man in a typical "woman's" occupation.
I'm sure the same thing happened when men started becoming flight attendants...even had a name change to cover the fact that it was becoming a co-gendered occupation, and now it's not strange to see males in that role.
I'm sure soon there will be plenty of male nurses that it will be the normal thing.
Good luck! :)

Tiezto: I'm a female nursing student - if I don't drop out, I'll take the NCLEX next summer. We have 60 students in our class, and about 6 are men. I don't believe there are any issues. That said, there are toxic people out there, and nursing students are no exception. I think men joining nursing is good for the profession. The person giving you bad vibes probably gives a lot of people the same. One of our male students was treated very badly when he was doing his maternity rotation, and it looked to all of us that she had a problem with his gender. I hope you can be thankful for your female colleagues, and blow off the jerks.

humm, well if she points out your weak areas just tell thanks for helping you see your flows and you wish you could help her in the same way but you see no flows and hope one day to be as perfect as her. then leave it at that. you know guys will forget little things like that by lunch time, but a girl, that little comment will stick with them. just dont say anymore about it after that. just walk away. she will love that. hehehe to poker her alittle if you want during clinic post conference when the instructer asks a question say, i want to hear what you think about that DR. whatever her name is. but dont talk back if she reacts just smile. if she asks you a direct question or comment just say what? and let her repeat it then say what again. repeat this process PRN. pretty soon when she sees you walking down the hall she will be the one that will be saying o no here he comes, and start looking to get out of your way. know not to take here comments personaly, also know she will take yours personaly. just be above all that and have some fun with it because a mind is terible thing not to mess with.hehehe

I'm a girl so I guess my opinion isn't welcome here but I thought I'd mention that we have a lot of problems with bashing in general in nursing. I have personally been bashed by both men and women.

I love women too....but....there are always going to be man haters wherever you work. There isn't much that you can do about it. You can stick a wooden stake in their heart, stuff their mouth full of garlic...but that really raises a lot of questions, and gets really messy. It is just easier to ignore them. I had one who would just berate me every morning. I finally thanked her. And then told her that she was helping with my exercise routine. Every time I dealt with her I spent more time at the gym to burn off the extra anger and stress. And for that I thanked her. She was speechless for the first time since I met her.
Stick with it, there is plenty of room in nursing for all of us, regardless of our plumming.
