Male student enters OB room. What do you think?

Published

I was doing my OB clinicals and entered a patient's room to deliver a food tray. Stupid move on my part, but it got me a complaint from the patient and kicked out of my OB class. I'm allowed to repeat next year.

I'd rather drink lye than go through OB clinical again. The patients were ok, it's the OB and L&D nurses that were horrible to the male nursing students. I've been scarred permanently, I'm not even interested in NICU anymore just because it is so closely affiliated with that experience.

Even though I find many of her opinions distasteful and offensive, I have to say that Hayest has shown a lot of patience and class in her responses to people who have attacked her, called her a weirdo, said that servers probably spit in her food, and basically telling her she is unwelcome here and she should go away. OTOH, she has been nothing but calm and polite in her responses. I really think people are being quite rude and awful.

She should stay why? She straight up says she does not want men caring for her. Will not allow most of the staff of her personal physician interact with her in any way. Has stated that people with tattoos and piercings are hepatitis carriers. Her prejudices and holier than thou attitude are quite nauseating and I truly don't believe that non-nursing/healthcare PROVIDERS do not belong on AN. If this were a private FB group, she would not be allowed to participate as she does not meet the "requirements" of the group.

As I am but a peon here, it is not my decision on whether or not she is allowed to continue to spout her particular brand of contempt. Maybe someone can explain to those of us who have wondered out loud about this can clue us in?

We have lots of non-healthcare people post here all the time! I've never before recalled any of them being told they shouldn't be posting here if they're not in healthcare.

This is absolutely NOT a private FB page, so I'm not sure why its being compared to one. This is a public message board.

For nurses. Maybe the name of the public website should change it's name?

Well, unless TPTB choose to only make it a website for nurses or students and against the TOS for anyone else, I think we will all just need to accept that non-nurses will continue to post here on occasion. I don't believe it's the spirit of the admins here to convey the attitude of "if you're not a nurse, you're not welcome here." (But please, I hope they will correct me if I'm wrong)

I think the only one absolutely not welcome is not a nurse but creates alternate personas as they perseverate on safety restraints being used in the OR and for C/S then melt down in a total tantrum compete with cursing out the universe. I will take an opinionated, headstrong respectful non-nurse any day over a rude boorish obstinate poster regardless of occupation. I don't have to agree with their thoughts and mindset but she has maintained relative dignity in responses even when her erroneous thoughts (all tattooed MA's are walking around infecting others with HepB) are challenged.

Back to the OP, he has already admitted there were other disciplinary write up and this last complaint from a patient and facility were the last straw resulting in dismissal from the program. There is more to the story than the original post, it seems the specific details are unique and could easily identify him if posted.

I agree. If you don't like nurses/MAs/healthcare professionals (which you have made blatantly obvious) why are you still on this website? Stop posting & bashing us. I know there can be healthcare providers that don't do their job well but that is not well, but this is not the forum for you. This forum is called AllNURSES. If you have nothing positive to add, then why are you still on this board?

I like nurses, I'm just not a fan with medical assistants. I am very proud of my daughter for choosing nursing as her career. I've always said nursing was a great profession. I have many friends who are nurses, MDs, X-ray techs, MRI techs. During our discussions, they pass on alot of info. I would love to see nurses back in physician offices. My daughter is in nursing school and I know how hard it will be for her, but I believe she will make a great nurse. She has been volunteering at a hospital the last 6 years and loves it. She can't wait to get through school so she can begin her career.

Several statements indicated that I am demanding. I have never demanded anything, I asked if my requests would be honored.

In regards to discussions with my MD about his staff, I didn't demand him with anything. We have great discussions while we walk or have dinner. I brought up many mistakes that took place and other incidents that I witness. In fact, he recently asked me for my point of view in regards to something took place in the waiting area with the immature medical assistant and two pharmaceutical reps. It was a site that took place and got out of hand. He asked me what took place and I told him.

When I have mentioned to him in the past to let me interview or hire me for a day, that wasn't a demand. That was a discussion.

When I was in the hospital, unfortunately, I got sick in the bed. The nurse ran down, but didn't make it in time. I felt horrible for her having to clean it up. I moved over to a chair and the best I could help her with was pulling the sheets that were tucked under. I asked her for disinfectant wipes so I could wipe down the bed on my side while she took care of the other.

I didn't demand anything, I asked for it. BIG Difference between demanding and asking for something. Not once did I say I WANT THIS or I WANT THAT .. I went down my list and asked if this or that would be possible and they even brought up a few that I wasn't aware of. When I asked that no students be a part of surgery or representatives in the room, they brought up having the least amount of people in the room. Just who is necessary for the surgery. They worked with me and I worked with them. There were a few requests that were not allowed, which once they explained a little more, it was understandable.

Thank you very much for your comment. Posting and feedback is a learning experience and I appreciate it. Just how a few of my requests were not allowed. Once they explained why, their explanation made perfect sense. I had no intention of offending anyone. Questions were posted and I commented how I feel about situations. The world would be boring if we all had the same ideas.

That makes me sad! I'm sorry you had such a horrible experience in your OB rotation. I've always loved seeing male students on the floor - most of them feel like such fish out of water, I want to try to ease the way for them as much as possible. I would love to see more male nurses in OB/L&D.

There is no reason to hate a WHOLE profession. That's a bit much. Have I met MAs that seemed under trained? Yes, but do I hate them all? No. I haven't met every single MA. So to come on this forum & bash MAs, I find very unbecoming of someone. It would be better to go somewhere else, not a forum called AllNURSES, to bash MAs. Maybe a forum for lay people. Then you could bash MAs & talk about all your odd requests that other people might get too. Because we certainly don't get it or don't agree.
