someone expressed the opinion to me at work one day that men get promoted more quickly in the nursing profession because they are a minority, being unusual this brings attention to them in interviews, ward enviornment etc, would anyone here agree with this as a reason?
I would tend to aggree with this. I wouldnt aggree that men are more focused than women I have worked with some very ambitious women
I reckon it is about even if you compare the ambitious men with the ambitious women in nursing.
Howerver I think though that men choose where they work more carefully ICU, ER, CCU you dont find many men slaving away on a medical ward or care of the elderly.

have to agree with a few posts on here, men tend to specialise more and do seem more motivated than women.
Saying that.... now I have escaped from the sink, have a dishwasher, where can I point my career arrow :)

Hello again
It's the technical and masculine aspects of ICU/ER that men firmly feel comfortable with (and they have been male bastions for years, haven't they?). I will stick my neck out and say that a lot of men like the opportunity to work more on a one to one basis with clients/patients (does that, and the masculine historical role of the MH nurse explain the large amount of men in Mental Health nursing?) and, through this and perhaps more controversially, they avoid having to work closely with women as direct supervisors. This may also be the case in OR where we can hide behind masks and poke faces and mouth swear words at all the women that are our bosses and are nasty - been there - but males can still work fairly independently there plus they are working predominently with other males in the shape and form of surgeons, anaesthetists and ODPs.
As someone who has slaved on more than one medical ward over the years, I have met more men (careful how I phrase that!) that work in ER/ICU/OR/MH than on a medical/surgical wards and slightly less that work in CCU. Is CCU perceived as less masculine?
BTW, males get promoted more because we have bigger brains and are natural leaders or it could be because we get noticed more as a minority group if we perform well? I await your comments
Cheers
OG.
