The Guys Club: Guy Students Come on In!

Nursing Students Male Students

Hi All!

I'm a crazy father of 2 ex-premed who just recently turned down Northwestern to go into a RN program.

I already have an Associate in Science, but I'll be getting another ADN and then go to a 4 yr school.

When I went to an info session about the RN program ill be trying to get into, out of like 70 ppl only 5 were guys.

So I want to know are there any men out there?

i had my first day today. all in all it was pretty good. mostly the basics the instructors of the program all lined up and read their respective parts of the student handbook (verbatim) and then carried on amongst themselves with inside jokes, all while standing/sitting in front of a class full of 60 students (50 f, 10 m, i am a m). further, one of the teachers made a disclaimer to the men in the class t hat occasionally there would be sexist remarks made by the instructors but that the guys would just have to deal with it because we were now in a female dominated field, period, laugh, laugh, laugh….( i couldn’t help but wonder how that would go across if the same thing were said to a group of 60 engineering students 50 of which were men and 10 of which were women). anyway, i immediately decided to let that little unprofessionalism go, but to mention it both here and later in my final instructor evaluation should it prove to be problematic. sorry, i digress...though i was not impressed with the level of professionalism or the preparedness of the various instructors, it was easy to see that each of the instructors are committed to teaching and helping the students learn. also they are all quite personable and seem to be accessible, they even gave out there home phone numbers. also, it became clear to me that the teachers seemed both strict but fair and i did not detect much a sense of elitism either, of which i am thankful. like i said, all in all i am happy with my decision to pursue this program and look forward to hitting the books ($850 worth) and leaning all i can from these very experienced nurses. it will be very challenging, but the program i am attending has had a 100% nclex pass rate for years, so it seems to be a good school, and they must be doing something right. well that is all for now i would love to hear any of your comments.

i agree, i’m not there to play grab*** or other college games, or worry about that crap, (though a certain level of professionalism is to be expected) i'm there to get myself to a place where i can support my family in the way they would like to become accustomed to living and have some fun doing it.

Specializes in N/A. I'm a nursing student..

By the way, what is the name of your school. 60 students? Wow that's a pretty big class. Oh, I hear that nursing school is demanding, yet students seem to find the time to play around on this site. So, it must not be super tough? As for me, I'm a male in my 40s about to start a LPN program in Arizona. I was given advanced placement for having A&P, micro. Having such just takes a few months off the standard 13 months, but I take it! I certainly plan on doing a fast track LPN-ADN afterwards.

I'm not sure how tough it is yet, but I am sure it will be challenging. Even so it is good to have a few minutes of downtime before one goes to bed to help the mind rest easier, at least for me. I found this out while in undergraduate school when I was under a tremdouse amount of stress. Some personal time really helps, it is my carrot for studying hard that I get to take soem time off.

Been watching these forums for a few months now, and finally figured it was time to actually register and throw in my two cents from time to time! Without further ado, here's my first post! lol

27 year old guy here!

Just started my prerequisites for an Associates RN program.

Spent 8 years working a job in manufacturing. I absolutely HATED every single minute of it. I have always wanted to do something that helped people and made a difference in the world and manufacturing did not do EITHER of those for me.

Soo... thats a little bit about me!

Good luck to those who don't think its hard. I am a current student in a ADN program and will be graduating in April 2010. The part that makes it hard is the fact that the instructors want to stress you to the max to see if you can handle it. The tests also consist of at least two right answers on every question. you have to figure out the BEST answer. Guys it is EASY to fail nursing school, don't get cocky.

I am a male student nurse, retired veteran (Navy/Army Guard), retired telecommunications tech. I work in home healthcare now. Of my 20 classmates, there are 3 males. I am the oldest , at 53, of all in the class. I am preparing to seize the day and take whatever comes in stride, counting on experience to counterbalance youth and gender.

Hey everyone, my name is Jared and I just started nursing school to get my RN! I'm 20 years old, and am 1 of 7 in our class of 50.

avoid PMS.

Hi,

I just joined..

I'm a 1st year student in Western Australia... at a small regional university (400 students max).

I'm one of 2 males in our class of 20!

:D

avoid PMS.

LOL, I don't particularly know if that is possible... I think the easier option would be to ensure you always have some OTC analgesics and NSAIDs available :p It is amazing how much you are appreciated for thinking ahead... I currently work at a restaurant (while doing all my pre-reqs) with primarily female serving and host staff, and I ALWAYS keep about 20 doses of acetaminophen and ibuprofen around. Also, surprises of chocolate are typically welcome! Bring in the miniatures pack with several different types of chocolate. It's like a broad spectrum antibiotic for PMS.
