I've heard there is a "glass elevaltor" for male nurses. My question is, do you think its easier for a new grad MALE NURSE to find a job that a female one? Also, I know that nurses can be very agressive with new nurses on a unit, does a MALE NURSE have a target on his back as a n00b in the unit especially as a new grad? I'm trying to decide between RT and ADN school right now (i've been accepted to both) and this is one of my concerns as a potential future nurse.
I can't remember when it was, but I remember seeing the most beautiful woman I have ever seen in person at the workplace waiting to talk to the medical director. She was wearing a pantsuit, but was as fine a woman as walked the earth. I asked a co-worker who she was. "A medical sales rep" If I was the medical director then, I would have offered to buy her company!

..............and that's why 99% of all sales reps are physically attractive, which is probably why ,most all are so self absorbed. Have you ever noticed most drug reps are attractive females.......why do you think that is......who are the DRUG REPS selling to! Talk about an industry that is not only gender skewed, but completely biased toward the "beatuiful people". It's not right, I don't like it, but I get it.
I worked in LTC Med surg sales, reps for that industry are mostly male (while male) with very few women. That industry could use some diversity, and I think that industry would be served well with more women carrying the bag and working in sales, and if a woman were to ask "do female sales reps get hired faster than male sales reps?". I would give her my honest feelings, and not treat her so harshly for asking a legitimate question.

What makes you think you didn't get honest answers??? I don't think they could have been any more honest.
NO, you will not be hired faster. Also out of the 7 males of an 70 student nurse graduating class the guys were treated with contemp and generally disrepectfully by all female professors. You will find resistance to your presence. Most resistance is from older nurses that still wear a flying nun skirt and hat or did a few years ago.
I feel like I got emotional answers from some...pi$$ed off that I even asked.....you included. Maybe thats their honest feeling, but it is in no way helpful or productive.
You said yourself that you would have given the female your "honest feelings," and that's the way I feel. It's not the fact that you asked the question. It's the motivation for asking, the place you are coming from as someone who is male and white (although I didn't know that at the time), the group of people that can most write their own ticket in this world, have not even started a nursing program yet, and you come across with a sense of entitlement to a nursing job just because you are male.
If the exact same question had been asked of someone who is already in the profession, the motivation would have been entirely different, and thus the initial response.
As for your last post about the female sales rep, I wasn't sure if I even felt like going there, but I can't believe you are even trying to compare the job of a sales rep, whose looks and gender may matter to the successful performance of job, to the nursing profession where looks and gender have nothing at all to do with performance. In a perfect world, gender would never play a role in any career. But you can't blame those who hire one gender over another when it clearly affects the bottom line. Nursing, and many other professions, are not that way.

I just want to say thank you for twisting every single post I've submitted here....... God bless.
Hey did you know that you can just write your own ticket in this world? Bet it's news to you! My white male husband and white male brothers need to start writing their tickets too!! LOL!!!
I'll start training my sons right away too on how to write their world tickets and start acting entitled. .. WOW
It is true that sales reps are for the most part, hired by both their knowledge and their attractiveness. Is it right? I can't honestly say. There have been multiple episodes on 20/20 about "beautiful people" getting ahead easier. Drug companies and medical tech companies know this, and hire people with charming qualities. I had a friend who used to be a nurse and was hired as a medical tech rep. She had to go to etiquette classes and had a total (completely paid for) makeover complete with makeup and hair revamped. She was at first offended, but when she started making the big bucks, it didn't really bother her as much. Now she looks like a celebrity 24/7.
Again I ask...is this right? Maybe not, but I don't really see where this is a hill for me to climb in the big scheme of things. I am certainly not going to opt for being in sales. I quite enjoy what I do, because I get to come to work in scrubs and just tuck my freshly washed (and wet) hair into a scrub cap, then put on a mask so that nobody really cares if I am wearing makeup or not!

So true! I do love the sarcasm. I say if you can't have fun at work then it must be time to find a new job.
