Here's a quick question for you guys. The fire department in my city puts out an annual calender to raise money for the dept etc. This calender shows a bunch of guys shirts off and all that. Anyway, a couple of weeks ago myself along with a few other male nurses at my hospital were asked by a PICU nurse (male) if we would be willing to be part of a male nurse calender similar to that of the fire fighters. The purpose of course is to raise money for the pediatric health foundation. To get to the point 12 of us agreed and the ball started rolling until a few vetran (female) nurses put up a HUGE fuss stating that we would be promoting the "nurse as a sex symbol" image. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but the last time I checked male nurses ranked just above plumbers in the fantasy image for the average woman. I'm not saying were not on the list but we do tend to fall past Fire fighter, Army, police... At any rate, a few of the guys are feeling guilty thinking that perhaps these women (very vocal women) may have a point. It's not going to be an X-rated calender or anything. The guy that started all of this is a little apprehensive about it now because of this. Anyway most of us that were asked said we would be happy to wear nothing but scrub pants, a stethoscope and a smile. And besides, I know my girlfriend said she'd buy one (there's at least $20 for the sick kids) Anyway I was just curious about what you fella's might feel about it (last I checked I never met a guy that didn't mind being thought of as a sex object, kidding...maybe) anyway I'm curious to hear what your opinions might be.
Well, it's interesting the turn that this thread took. Anyhow, thanks for the input everyone. At this point the guy that started this whole deal seems to be a little nervous about carrying on with it at the moment. Apparently some of these "VERY VOCAL WOMEN" to put it nicely have gotten some of the higher ups involved etc etc etc. So it may or may not happen. There is about 10 of us that are now wanting to do the bloody thing outta spite. Anyway I'll let cha know if it actually gets off the ground.
Here is the link to the Okla Nurses Association 2006 Men in Nursing calender.
Im agreeing w/ the OK nurses in saying it could be a great tool for male recruitment. Ok maybe it will lead some to believe ppl are going into the field to "meet chicks" but i think that is a lil extreme. To me it says hey you can be a nurse, a "caring" professional and still be masculine and attractive to females, yadda, yadda, yadda... that and i think its kinda hott :roll but then again i'm one of those terrible types who has been the "provocative" nurse for Halloween twice, with a Dr. date one year and a patient date the next... (my B/f was in a wheel chair from an accident so it was convenient) I dont think that these sorts of things mean i take my future career any more lightly or that i cant wait to get behind closed doors and seduce my future coworkers or patients... If the calendar goes through PM me details would definitly buy a few)
I would be more apt to buy the calendar if the guys keep their shirts on.
I don't think you need to partially disrobe to sell the calendar.
Just some good looking male nurses, in nice scrubs, stethescopes hanging, badges on, ink pen in their pocket....let it look real.
I think it is disrespectful for female nurses to be portrayed in sexual ways......females can look good with their clothes on. So can the men.
I vote for keeping the shirts on.
I don't think the calender should be done. Society has a responsibility of shielding all ignorant people from any stimuli that might engender an inappropriate thought.
Instead, there should be a calendar of stupid nurses. That way, the ignorant folk will think that the profession is peopled with narrow-minded dip schlitz like themselves. You won't sell any product, but you would protect the socially-challenged from themselves. Afterwards, we can ask the models to explain to the kids why they won't be getting their needed support.
Gawd... I think I'm getting cynical in my old age....

Most excellent post....it goes to the heart of the matter.
What is the calendar trying to PROJECT...men in the field of professional nursing or men as beefcake?....that is the essential question.
lol, yeah this thread went all the way to left field. just do it, even out of spite. i mean no matter what you do, even if nothing, there will be some that say its wrong. we have the should b's posting in here and the way it is saying they will buy one so go for it. need two more models to fill the last two months, i will be Mr. May if you need. am also a lifegaurd and was on the water polo/swim team in college, still in good shape and will wear just my speedos and a stethescope if need be.
wait, i got an idea. how about doing a calender with fat over wieght guys in a speedo's. hehehe
i wonder if the people saying keep the shirts on have ever been to california. everyone walks around with no shirts during the summer months. a calender with guys with no shirts would not be all that sexy here. heck, most bikini's show more than most bra and panties. if you live Utah or something i guess it could be shocking but, most will not think of it one way or the other, its just a calender. besides the more that people complain about it the more others will want to see what all fuss is about and go out and get one.

I thought about that. I'd even volunteer for January. But when my wife suggested that such a calendar would be a safe alternative to syrup of ipecac... well.. kinda took the fun out of the idea.

I , for one, have many nurse friends who are male, :nurse:and some are gay and some are not. Never really mattered to me...they are nurses first in my mind...but I would love the calendar..it is for a good cause and all in fun. If someone is offended, they dont have to buy it!
