Hello,
I have a question about being a LPN in CT. I am a male getting ready for LPN school. I am also a CNA. After school I want to move back to CT were I grew up. I want to work in LTC. What are the starting pay rates for LPN's in CT in LTC? How much overtime can you work? I want to be able to work at least 60 hours a week or more if possible. Can you get a lot of OT in LTC, in CT if you want it? My wife is also going to LPN school and we both want to work in LTC when we graduate. Are LTC homes hiring in the northeatern part of CT (Hartford, Manchester, Windam, etc)? Is there any LPN to RN bridge programs in CT? If anyone could provide in information or advise I would be very grateful?
Regards,

First, congrats on deciding to become a nurse :) I am also a male CNA in LPN school, here in Connecticut. There are a number of nursing homes in the state that are always looking for LPNs... so I wouldn't worry. My advice is to find a nice home to be your 'base', which will pay a little less but give you benefits, then sign up for a 'pool' at one of the agencies to fill in the gaps at a higher rate.
This seems to have worked for me - especially in school... I work as a CNA 24 hours a week, which makes me eligible for benefits, then as a pool when classes aren't killing me.
To find a list of nursing homes in the area, I suggest hospitalsoup.com... its got every facility and links to their website, where you can see if they are hiring.
Best of luck!
Dave

Smiley8, I will be attending the LPN evening Program at NETI in New Britain in Sept 2006 I just got registerd today with Nikki I am so delirous of happiness I can't wait to start even though I'm shaking in my boots. I decided to bite the bullet and forget about how much it's going to cost me at buckle down and go for it, even though it is costing me 28k I rather go through NETI instead of waiting for the state LPN Program to have an available opening. And as for the R.N Program It will take me to longer to get my Prerequist and then to be place on a waiting list, about time I even finish my R.N I would have already been an LPN but, don't get me wrong, I wll be going to college and be the first of five kids in my family to have :mortarboard: graduated and earn a BSN....I will be 40 yrs old about time I finsih my LPN even though their is nothing I can do about my age I just have to go for it and stop placing dreams and new my career in the back burn I've been dying to go back to work even if it kills me.....:chuckle :chuckle :chuckle also what LPN program have you decided to atten mornings or evenings let me know at [email protected]

hey tax, i will be the same age by time i get my degree as well. nice to meet you.
i need some help. i have started my prereqs at MCC, i have a BA, and i am lost on what to do next. i didnt even know about NETI until this thread.
my first intentions were to go to St Joes or Quinni and get a BSN, but now it looks like i will not have the GPA or prereqs in time for Dec. i dont want to wait for another year to go to Quinni, and i recently have heard some slightly negative things about St Joes.
can you or anyone share your experiences? i have googled "nursing in CT" but there are so many small schools, i just dont where to begin.
i guess my question is....what made you decide on NETI as opposed to another program?

hello,
I saw that you were a new grad. & thoughts you wuld know best.
MY graduating class was told that they heard from 2 other students that took the lpn nclex exam that they both had 85 questions & of those 85 were 40 multiple select questions. Half of they multiple select???? How can this be possible at all. How can this be based on that type of exam? Does this sound correct to you? I always thought they was a cap to the amount of different types of questions...doesn't all of the nclex books give you examples (in the front section) of the test format & an example of how they set-up the questions?

Tia,
Check out the State of CT LPN programs that are probably MUCH cheaper than New England Tech. Here is their website:
http://www.cttech.org/lpn/index.htm
I'm a graduate of the Vinal Tech - Middletown part time evening program...you can private message me if you like if you have any questions about it.
You can't go wrong going the LPN route first. I was in the same situation as you...have a bachelors from Uconn in Psyc and wanted to go to RN school but did not want to wait. I chose State of CT LPN program @ Vinal and am doing Excelsior right now. I'll become an RN about 6 months after my LPN graduation since I'm busting my hump. One thing that helped me immensely was taking A&P1 and 2 and Microbiology at a local community college during the summer (Bridgeport). Man, those courses would have been tough to tackle via Excelsior route. Good luck.

Currently attending New England Tech and there has to be lots of improvements before I can recommend this school to anyone. You get a good education, but this place is expensive ($26,000) and disorganized. There has been difficulty finding appropriate clinical sites, no accountability from staff. I am very dissapointed overall but I will finish this program. My advice is try to get into an LPN program run by the state. It is cheaper and hopefully less frustrating.
