2014 LPN students

Published

This thread is for those who is about to start LPN program. It will be great if we keep each other posted on our excited journey, share the experience and maybe answer questions that others will have about the program.

So, i guess i start. On July 11 i will be starting 11 months long program at one of the local technical schools. My mandatory orientation is on June 10 where, according to letter that I received, we will be given our first homework (a month before the actual course starts!!!). I am 31 y.o married and have a 3 y.o son. I work as a CNA and I will continue working p.t during the program. I am very nervous because I haven't take any science classes since high school. English is my second language but that will not be a problem. I chose the LPN path because I love to work at the patience bedside, i can earn decent money and gain more hands on experience. I am planing to further my education after becoming LPN.

I am wishing everyone who is about to start or just started good luck! Lets do it together

Had my first exam today!! It was nerve wrecking but I got an 85!!!! :)

Congrats!!!!!!

I want to slip into your posts and offer you some insights. 37 years ago I received my LPN from Oswego county BOCES in upstate NY. At that time it was 5 days a week for 10 months, 10 years later I earned my RN from McLennan Community College in Waco Tx. In my 50's I went back and earned my BSN followed by my MSN Ed from Grand Canyon University Phoenix Arizona.

I am a Director of an LPN program now and I love reading your posts because it reminds me of where I came from, and I think it makes me a better Director for it.

Suggestions for you as you start your journey:

Use your spell checker, as an instructor there is nothing worse than reading many papers that have not been spell checked, or grammar checked, or in appropriate APA format.

Use your calendar; stay ahead on your reading, life happens--and it can be easy to fall behind

Be respectful of each other and your instructor

There is no bad question except for the one not asked

Keep yourself healthy and rested

Try not to work full time if you are able

Do self quizzes all the time so you keep track of where your own strengths and weaknesses are

We can not teach you everything you need to know- but we can teach you how to find the answers

Nursing school is NOT general education--you can not get by through memorization--you must learn how to critically reason

concept maps help you to learn how to think and reason in a critical manner

communicate with your instructors, they can not help you if they don't know what you need

help each other-- you are a team--look at your class with the goal that everyone will pass and succeed--you learn and retain the information better when you have to teach it, so if you are strong in one area, and someone else is strong in another, help each other

You are never too old to learn

Nursing is a life long learning career---

Practice your skills--find a partner, and rotate partners, everyone one has something different to offer you

BE KIND TO EACH OTHER AND TO YOURSELF

AND THE BIG ONE: HAVE FUN LEARNING, YOU WILL MAKE MISTAKES, MAKE THEM IN THE SKILLS LAB WHERE YOU ARE SAFE TO KILL A PATIENT AND LEARN FROM IT.

GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF YOU!!!!

I start my 12 month LPN course October 1st. I am so very excited, we have our orientation September 13th! I am just very worried about my job. I work midnights as a CNA. With my program being Mon-Fri 8-2, should I keep my job or quit? I don't want to overwhelm myself between work and school.

Hey. If you don't need to, try not to work everyday. I only work weekends 3-11. Thursday-Saturday. But I don't have kids so it's easier for me. It's a lot of work and I still have to dig to stay ahead even though I don't work during the week. So do what you absolutely need to. Don't get burned out!!

Its been hard for me I work Fri sat sun 3 to 11 class Mon wed Fri clinical on Tues my grades are good but I missed a class today over something stupid. Feeling very upset trying to brush it off and get back on the horse again

Well I can say its been rough. I'm passing fundamentals but weary of lab tests. Its been very hard working and going to school. We have great teachers but they all teach very different some give ppts some do not. Calculations test is in less than two weeks. I know I can do this but have had alot of stress and the anxiety of failing. I do not want to fail. Agggghh!!!

Ok , just a little update. So I have been juggling 6 class and I have all A's and one B , this term is over in 4 week then I will have just 2 class and clinical. Super excited ☺️☺️☺️☺️
