I know that almost every bridge program is going to require you be licensed as an LPN/LVN for the advanced standing credit. I'm sure there are ways around it, but that is going to be your easiest option is to get your license first.
Also, just want to remind you, as I do everyone that is going to do an online program, that they are considered "non-traditional nursing programs" by most board of nursings - and therefore has different qualifications in each state. So if you plan on moving around, you might want to take that into consideration.
Example - I live in oklahoma, which requires 60 extra clinical hours if it's a non-traditional program - which is not bad.
BUT - I plan on moving to Colorado next year, and when I called them they said I have to do 750 extra clinical hours (WOW) or work as an RN for 2000 hours in another state for endorsement.
anyway, just FYI
good luck!

Without an LVN license you will not be able to start an LVN to RN bridge course whether it is online or traditional. You have to get your license before you do anything else. Since you are in CA, Excelsior College, the most popular distance program, is not an option. There are now three major online programs that may interest you and they are recognized by the CA BRN: Indiana State University LVN to BSN program, http://www.indstate.edu/degreelink/lpntobs, University of Oklahoma accelerated BSN program for which you need a bachelor's degree to start, and the new Western Governors University program, http://www.wgu.edu. The first WGU clinical group starts in July and the second group starts in January. You need at least a CNA certificate and a degree to have the prerequisites completed. You can do this program without an LVN license, but you need to have all the prerequisite classes completed. There is also a local proprietary program through Unitek that started a couple of years ago, but have not heard positive things about it. You might want to look into that program since it is local. Good luck with your plans to get an RN license.

CA doesnt reconize Excelsior for initial licensure, but you can endorse in after a year experience as an RN, they do a case by case review....If you want to work at the VA, then you can do excelsior and do boards for another state, work VA then endorse after a year

I need to see this in writing from the CBON. I know CA will take VA RNs, but I have never heard of them taking RNs after one year experience in another state.
Call the CA BRN and get an answer on this. Have seen this option mentioned several times, but no one has given definitive info on it. Seems to me that if this were the case, it would be common knowledge and Excelsior College would also put out the info. I do believe that EC will not enroll students with CA addresses. This would contradict this info.
I enrolled in the program in 07 with a CA address, had no problems...call the board and talk to them...Excelsior also told me they have had students getting endorsed after 6-12 months in another state....but its case by case,,,per the CA board..if your exp is in a clinic/nursing home you might not get endorsed..if its in acute care you have a better chance.....

i don't think this is true....it plainly says on the ca board of nursing that ec is not accepted because of the lack of 810 supervised clinical instruction...the only way you are getting a nursing license in ca is if you were enrolled before 12/03/03...

Instead of saying its not true and implying others dont know what they are talking about...call the CA board and find out yourself....I have and thats what I was told..the lack of clinical hours is made up when your licensed and working as an RN in another state, hence the 6-12month experience.... (916) 322-3350 and I asked for whoever worked with excelsior licenseing......
