    Just WHAT is an LVN? I know what an LPN is, I know what an RN is, but while I see the letters LVN a lot, I have no idea what a 'vocational' nurse is.
    LVN = Licensed Vocational Nurse
    LPN = Licensed Practical Nurse

    California and Texas refer to their basic nurses as LVNs, whereas the remaining 48 states refer to their basic nurses as LPNs. Since I am licensed in California and Texas, I am called an LVN. If I were to obtain licensure in any other state and work there, I would be called an LPN. It is the exact same type of nurse.

    yeah i was accepted on my first try. i had to go through an interview with the DON, pass an entrance test, and show my HS diploma. i decided to go through a private school cause the local CC's had a waiting list of 2-3 years, i figured that working would pay off the schools tuition in 6-12 months. i graduated back in april of 06, worked for 6 months in a cardiac floor, and now im going for my RN. I actually miss working the floor though. its kinda funny cause when your at work you dont wanna work, and when your not working you wanna work. kinda weird, but thats just me. good luck and study hard!

    Lelorde37, I totally understand what you mean. Thanks to recent health-related issues, I'm stuck on light duty (again) -and as rough as my floor can be, I wish I were back on it, that things were back to 'normal'.

    I was accepted on the first try but they asked me for high school diploma, transcripts, 3 letters of recommendation, the entrance exam, and an interview with the director of the school who is like doctor nurse...But then again I applied at a hospital-based school that is commonly referred to by the other LPN schools around as "Mercy nursing bootcamp". But its an excellent program.

    I applied to RN school first and was told that I qualified but didn't make the cut. I then applied to LVN school and was accepted my first try. Over 400 applicants and 80 interviews later, 50 of us were chosen. I am so glad I went this route first. I am learning a lot. I will be going through the LVN-RN transition progrm in Aug.

    Franko, did you apply to a private LVN school or was it at a community college? That's a lot of applicants!

    It's a private school working in conjunction with a hospital. That is a lot of applicants. Actually that many took the NET and then a portion of them were invitied to apply, then a portion of them were invited to interview and a portion of them were accepted. Alot of portioning went on.

    Yes - just got the letter half an hour ago! Class starts 30 May... which is a year to the day from when I started as a CNA.
