  1. It's not the alcohol alone that kills the bugs but the friction along with the alcohol that destroys.
  2. That goes for patients of all ages. I have a 21 yr old to an 85 yr old act the same way. writhing in pain and suffering when family is around and calm when they leave or not around. We just need to deal with it and move on.
  3. When in doubt...swab it. Why take the chance of introducing something unneccessarily to your patient. My instructors always reminded me that these meds were going straight into the bloodstream and we are the defense against infection and injury. I always swab. 3 seconds and a swab later....my conscious is clear and my patinet is safe.
  4. The first 6 months of nursing I was petrfied i was going to harm or worse, kill someone due an error of some sort. I had great support from my coworkers and they answered every question I had and demonstrated everything I read about but didn't know how to do. I was harder on myself than anyone was, and I still am. I am a pretty good nurse now because of it. You are heading down the same road. Give yourself a chance to get used to things. 3 months is not enough time to be "comfortable and bumble free". Never be afraid to ask questions or guidance because ultimately your butt is on the line and you want to give your patients the best care you can. Good luck to you. You will improve.
  5. I see the same thing, students sitting around talking. I was a student at that nursing school last year and I have actually started pulling students in with me to help me do assessments, dressing changes, IV starts, etc.. They only watch but I figure the more exposure the better. I have spoken to their instructors and informed them of what I am doing and they are all for it. I wish nurses would have done the same thing when I was in school.
  6. I started LVN school at 41. I am now 42 and an LVN. I love it and I'm here to tell you it's never to late. I will start the LVN-RN transition in August. Go for it.
  7. Wish me luck guys, I take mine on Monday. Good luck to everyone.
  8. Hello all. I am scheduled to take the NCLEX-PN on monday the 14th. I am a little anxious about it because I hate standardized tests, but I feel that I have been prepared for this by my instructors and by studying. So far all in my class that have taken the exam have passed. I am just reading and reviewing a little to refresh my memory. Good luck to all. Try to relax.
  9. I was a ______ prior to being a nurse/student nurse I was a high school teacher for 16 years before becoming a nursing student. I enjoyed doing it, but became burned out and wanted to do what I akways wanted to do....become a nurse. I just graduated last night.
  10. I just finished 2 weeks in L&D and I loved it. I saw many births and actually got to help set up sterile field and coach "mom" because "dad" wasn't there. I also got to attend 2 c-sections. I feel I was very lucky. I did run across the occasional "I'd like a female to help me" and that is understandable. The people I had the most problem with were the nurses on that floor pretty much ignoring me. That was not the best feeling one can have in nursing school.
  11. Congrats from a fellow LVN student. You're in for a wild wonderful stressful rewarding ride. Have fun and good luck.
  12. It's a private school working in conjunction with a hospital. That is a lot of applicants. Actually that many took the NET and then a portion of them were invitied to apply, then a portion of them were invited to interview and a portion of them were accepted. Alot of portioning went on.
  13. I applied to RN school first and was told that I qualified but didn't make the cut. I then applied to LVN school and was accepted my first try. Over 400 applicants and 80 interviews later, 50 of us were chosen. I am so glad I went this route first. I am learning a lot. I will be going through the LVN-RN transition progrm in Aug.
  14. Congratulations! You are in for an interesting, fascinating, stressful, rewarding time. I am an LVN program right now and I really love it. I sill feel the tingling effect I got from reading my acceptance letter. Good job. Don't forget to enjoy and have fun.
  15. After teaching for 16 yrs, I left in December and started an LVN program in Jan. I have spent mostof my time in study groups making all this information sink in. We have started clinicals these past couple of weeks and I have to tell you that it was all worth it. I really enjoy it. My classmates are wonderful. They come from medical and nonmedical backgrounds and they are succeeding. Can you make it? Sure you can. Dedicate yourself to the time needed to do the work and you can make it. Get yourseld set up with a good support group and they will help you throught the rough patches just as you will help them. Good luck to you.
