Low gpa! Do I have a shot?

Nursing Students Chamberlain College

Published

Hi everyone, thank you in advance for taking the time to read this.

I'm currently in my 2nd year at Wayne State University and have decided to change my career path to nursing. I initially wanted to do nursing but decided to do medicine. Now after realizing I have a very slim chance at medical school (due to being an international student, and lower gpa) I've decided to do nursing as I initially wanted to. I am a Canadian student, so I'm looking for a nursing school that would accept me as an international.

My first year was tough, I had personal issues going on therefore resulting in a low gpa and bad start. I have a 2.67 gpa. I am looking into the ADN to BSN route as I don't think I will be able to be accepted to a BSN direct program due to my low gpa and the high competitiveness of the programs. I'm looking into Chamberlain very seriously, the high cost is not an issue as I really require getting into nursing. They require a 2.75 minimum at any previous universities. Do you think I will get rejected even if I perform well on the HESI exam which they require? Please be honest, if anyone has any stories of acceptances with a low gpa it would greatly help. Thank you so much.

This is causing me so much stress!!! Any other easier, less competitive ADN Programs would be highly appreciated!!! ANYTHING HELPS.

I got in! I start Aug 31st at the Jacksonville, FL campus :).

Hi, I'm in for Jacksonville also. What date did you pick for orientation?

Elenamarie83, I plan on applying for Chamberlain for either their Summer or Fall session. I as well am in the same boat that you were in. My GPA is just below their requirements. Do you mind me asking what your GPA was when you applied? Other than their requirements do they take your HESI score greatly into account?

Did you get accepted into the Houston location? If so, how was your GPA?

I myself am in a similar situation. I know people like you and I who were excepted into Chamberlain despite the low GPA. With that being said, if you do well on your entry exam, which is the HESI. You do have a chance. Volunteer work, internships, certificates, etc. will help you as well. I'm In California one of the most competitive states for nursing and if these lower GPA people can be accepted for a BSN-RN in this program I don't see why we wouldn't be as well. Retaking classes to bring up the GPA to look more competitive would also be a good idea as well if you want some extra cushion!

Has anyone ever been rejected from Chamberlain? Their goal is profit, not student quality.

Absolutely! I've known a handful of students who have been rejected from that program. Including myself. In Sacramento the campus say's it's benchmark is a 3.0 GPA, but really accepts students within a 3.4 and up. Not to mention, an entry exam (HESI A2) of at least the high 90's to even be considered competitive. The HESI exam is about 6 hours long and tests you on 7 topics that require you to get a good grade in order to obtain that high 90's score they're looking for. The school only has 40 seats open (maybe even less now). I'm not sure why people give the school such a a bad rep. At the end of the day those students sit in the same NCLEX every other nurse had to do.

You have to work hard to get in and stay in this program. Some locations are more competitive than others but make no mistake this program is incredibly challenging.
