Does anyone know if Louisville hospitals (any of them) offer domestic partnership insurance benefits? Just wondering....looking to move there after i graduate in July...how's the job market for new nurses? Not really looking for a specialty right now, just a good place to work with good people and good training/orientation :-)
So what's the scoop? :-) Thanks for any info!

Here you go- U of L Hospital offers domestic partner insurance coverage. It's a very busy work environment, but I loved my 7 year tenure there.
Most of the other hospitals in the area are tied to some sort of religious entity, so you might have difficulty finding the benefits you're seeking with them.
The market is not fabulous here at this time, but you should be able to obtain employment as a RN.
Good luck to you, and let us know when you move, so we can welcome you.
thanks so much! i appreciate your gesture of welcome :-) my wife and i are moving from miami and we don't get a lot of "friendly" down here! hahahaha....guess that's why we're moving!
closer to graduation, i'll call nurse recruiters in the area and get the scoop on benefits, and on starting salary. i assume it is much lower than what my sister makes as a nurse in Madison, Wisconsin, since i believe the cost of living is lower in Louisville.
thanks again!
Well, you'll like Louisville, then!
I'm thinking the starting pay here for new grads is around $19-$20/hour, but the cost of living is fairly low. It's a great place to live, if I must say so myself.
Thank you for your encouraging reply! We are hoping it's not too conservative for our little "nontraditional" family...we're not looking for gay bars or nightlife, just a good town where we can raise good kids like everyone else without getting shunned or looked down upon :-)
can't wait to graduate!!!
You'll be just fine. You may want to look into the Clifton/Crescent Hill area, or the Highlands area, when you start home shopping. They're right next to each other, and are about 10 minutes from the downtown hospitals. Y'all will fit right in with the rest of us there- not to worry. These are the less conservative neighborhoods, and half my neighbors are 'family.'

Are you gay? B/c if so lou. & mostly the health field are not to fond of people like us HAHAHA just to say the least..for god sake we still have the KKK marching in parades in the hills of KY....If I were you & looking for a "friendlier" place I would choose a state such as CA for sure or a big city such as NYC/Miami that is more diversified...That's what I would do if i had the option!!! KY is friendly & tolerates it okay but like it was mentioned earlier most of the hosp. have religious ties & might be hesisatent to open up w/ welcome arms..I wouldn't be caught dead screaming "I'm Gay" in my nursing class without the worry of being "shunned" ...my gf can't even disclose being gay at her workplace b/c ky law doesn't give gays any rights...Best of luck to ya

I work at the Veterans Hospital where to discriminate based on choice of partners is probabaly illegal so I would imagine if you live together and support a household together you would qualify but frankly I'm not sure. Job market wise if you have some experience you're probably more apt to find something here. And Louisville is a great place to live and work...but of course I'm from here! Good Luck!

Kentucky does not equal gay tolerant but Louisville is better than most places in the state.

I am a gay woman and my partner and I are both nurses....the city if fairly tolerant and I work for the government, so I don't have much to worry about since it is llegal to discriminate against us. The VA just started domestic partnership coverage for Long Term Care only. I figure it's just a matter of time before federal employees can cover thier domestic partners under the health and dental insurance programs. My partner went to Galen and she had no issues with her class knowing that she is gay. I would totally recommend the Highlands area for diversity, however it is a little pricey. Look at Hikes Point as well, it's a working class and intergrated area. There are 3 (including my own) gay families on my street alone. My children are teens and they have not had any problems at school or camps with people knowing that they have gay parents. I welcome you to email me or PM me for more specific info or questions! Good luck!
Oh, and another thing...I would only consider Louisville or Lexington for diversity and fairness.
