Hi all! I love allnurses thus far -- have gleaned a wealth of info here that helped confirmed my decision to become a nurse! I am currently taking my first pre req (english comp/rhetoric) and now I don't know which I should take together... I work 20 hrs a week and have a toddler at home -- she keeps me busy! I am extremely motivated and determined to get most of my pre reqs out of the way but don't want to take on too much and have to drop any classes or make anything less than a B...
here is what I have left:
Mat 191 - College Algebra
Psy 191 - Intro to Psych
Bio 193 - A&P I
Bio 194 - A&P II
Bio 197 - Microbio
The following classes are not pre reqs and can be taken during nursing school...I however would like to have them out of the way before that though:
Spc 191 - Fund of Speech
Soc 191 - Intro to Sociology
Psy 291 - Human Growth & Development
Sct 100 - Intro to Microcomp
and one of the following:
HUM 191
Introduction to Humanities
OR
MUS 191
Music Appreciation
ART 191
Art Appreciation
(I would like to take the music or art class, as that seems more interesting and easier to me than humanities...but would it be more beneficial in this field to take hum 191?)
The tech college I attend has 4 semesters--one per season...
I was thinking of doing this:
Algebra and Intro to Psych this fall,
A&P I and Intro to Microcomp in the winter,
A&P II and Music App. in the spring,
Microbio and Fund. of Speech in the summer,
and hopefully in Fall 2009 I will be in the nursing program but will have Sociology and Human G&D left... which shouldnt be too difficult to do, right??? I dunno...
Thank you so much for taking the time to read/respond to all of this... I am new to the whole college thing and want to do my best without getting too stressed or going nuts!

That sounds like a good plan to me! I take an average of 8-12 credits per semester and I work full-time at a Hospital (3 12hr shifts a week). Just to warn ya, Micro will through you for a loop....it is one of the more tricky ones. I LOVED anatomy so I never had a big problem with that one. Hope I helped!

i think the schedule you have planned out is a good one. i had music appreciation for my elective also. i worked while doing pre reqs, have two busy kids and a hubby and maintained a 4.0 through pre reqs. nursing school for me begins in a little over five weeks. good luck with your classes!

sounds like you're really giving this a lot of consideration. it should serve you well.
your schedule looks good. my only caution might be with mirobiology. if your summer session is a shorter session, you might..might want to switch that up. my experiance was a good one with micro- i found it fascinating- but it was very information dense.
best wishes!

You made a relly good plan. It is a good idea to balance the classes like that so that you take a harder one with an easier one. It is also good to get as much as possible done before you get into the program.
Check out professors online or ask around at school, too. I did this and found some really good professors this way. (and I avoided some with reputations for being difficult)
Good luck and have fun!

Consider taking some of these "easier" classes online, that way you can hack away at them on your own time rather than having to leave your toddler or deal with a work schedule. You might even be able to take more than just two classes a semester that way:
Intro to Psych
Intro to Sociology
Human Growth & Development
HUM 191/MUS 191/ART 191
This past Spring I took Micro, Medication Calc Math, and Human G&D (online). This Summer I took English Lit/Critical Thinking, Public Speaking, and Music (online). In just 8 weeks that was totally workable. I have four kids and work outside the home too so being able to "go to class" at 2am or on a Sunday when I had time was so cool.
Personally I saved the science prereqs for my last three semesters before applying due to the recency rules on finishing them.
OH and I love this site: http://ratemyprofessors.com/ I use it religiously to pick my instructors. It hasn't failed me yet and haha, neither have the teachers.

I second the ratemyprofesor.com idea. When you want/need to get going with your schooling and you don't have time to mess around with insane teachers, it sure helps.
Have you thought about CLEP/DANTE tests? The Humanities, Sociology, and Psychology ones I've heard are easy and that would put you ahead of the game significantly, as well as save $$. Just a thought. Good luck!
Thanks so much, yall!
I hadn't thought about the ratemyprofessor.com thing...good idea!
I was planning on taking as many pre-reqs online as possible, gas is waaay too much right now to be driving 30 mins multiple times a week. lol.
I haven't thought about CLEPping out of some of those classes...I will def. look into that!
And apgar10--4 kids!?! Thanks, now I have absolutely no excuse...hehe!!]]
Thank you to everyone again, this helped so much!
I love this site

I would actually make one change. At my school the sciences are very important, they are one of the major factors in determining who gets into the program. I would take the Psych class in the summer and start A&P1 this fall. That way when you apply (assuming in the spring)you will have at least 1 of the sciences completed.
Well, the only prob i have with that is that my college said that I had to have the Eng and Mat 191 finished by 2009 because my SAT/ACT scores will expire...? And if I didnt I would have to take the COMPASS test, which cost time and money that I'd rather not spend....
so would it be too much of a load to take on College Algebra with A&P I ? I am mathematically inclined so I would think it would be fine, but again, I haven't taken any kind of math classes since high school in 4.5 years ago, lol.
