Los Medanos 2014

Is there anyone else that was on that tiny list of students drawn in the lottery today? I was, and I'm so excited! :)

What do we do now, wait for something in the mail?

I have been trying to find places in pittsburg or at least within 30min drive of pittsburg, BUT it has been so hard to find anything! Im going to have to share a place so i have been on craigslist looking for room shares but most people want someone who can move in right now and i wont get there until 8-1 and they would be having me move in without meeting me first so it has been very frustrating. hopefully i can find something soon.

What's everyone doing as far as Financial Aid? Everyone plan on keeping a job while in the program? I'm kinda starting to freak out, because I was relying on private loans to get me through my living expenses so I wouldn't have to work during the program. Turns out there's not too many Private Loan lenders that work with LMC. I'm hoping I qualify for Stafford Loans and Pell Grants, but with all the units I've taken at other colleges and current loans with my VN program I don't have many options. HELP!

I dont plan on working at all during the program. I have enough saved to pay for rent for the 2 years, but the rest will be student loans for me.

I won't be able to work during the program, and I can't get loans either because I already have a bachelor's degree. I'll have to rely on savings and friends and family.

If you've filled out your FAFSA and you have a low income, you can qualify for the Board of Governors waiver. That will waive the cost of the units you have to sign up for (several hundred dollars).

Is anyone moving else moving to the SF area for school? I have been having a hard time trying to find an apartment/housing share.

Hi Angela,

I'm sorry you're having a tough time finding a place. I'm sure you've tried this already, but I think the best place to look is on Craigslist. What's your budget?

How are all of you doing with your checklist? Have you all ordered books and uniform?

I've been all over craigslist. I'm just going to have to find something when i get to SF.

I am mailing out the last of my checklist today and ordering my books and kits today and fortunately I already have tons of scrubs.

Another question, I am having the worst time trying to get loans. How is everyone paying for this?

I was having a hard time with loans too, since Los Medanos doesn't work with any private loan companies like Sallie Mae. (I already have an outstanding loan with them from LVN school). Fortunately my mom's gonna help support me while I'm in nursing school for the 2 semesters since I'm only doing LVN transition. If you have a co-signer maybe you can look into a personal loan? I've also talked with my financial aid officer and she said loan applications will be available in August. I have to wait for the appeal process (3-4 weeks) just to get Pell Grants since I've taken so many units, too.

I'm stressed about moving, too! Everything is expensive, and I want to move, but my boyfriend works in Sacramento and we only have 1 car to share. Looks like I'm gonna be doing a lot of commuting/ staying at my parents house in Vallejo... Our lease is about to expire, and we may downgrade from a 2 BR to 1 BR so rent will be cheaper.

Has everyone mailed in their paperwork? I had to re-take my drug screen and pay $50 because i drank too much water so that I could go--- and my result came out diluted. I can't register until I get the clearance from Beth Ann who is OUT UNTIL AUGUST 4. I can't buy my lab kit until I'm registered in classes! I suppose I can mail out my paperwork anyway, but if the deadline is August 1st, how does that work out? I'm going to print out my background/drug screen along with Beth Ann's email and hopefully admissions will let me enroll. ** I also tried to pay for my lab kit before registering so hopefully it goes through!**

Are we supposed to order our scrubs from somewhere? I have my own scrubs but I imagine there's a uniform for clinicals.

Sorry to hear you will be commuting so far, but lucky for you it's just 2 semesters. What are we mailing? I thought it was just the essential functions page and the health stream is emailed. The background, drug and health stuff is all uploaded electronically. Is there anything else? The scrubs are ordered from scrubs in antioch, white top, wine colored pants, by the way , I'll look like I'm wearing a parachute :( getting nervous with the deadline quickly approaching

You're probably right, I just thought that we needed to provide the hard copies since it said to mail the Physical forms to Los Medanos. It does look like it was an old form, since it says it's due on August 3, 2012 :***:. Is scrubs the name of the store? How'd you find out this information, I'm out of the loop!

The BBQ handout said scrubs etc would be taking orders, they are in lone tree in antioch and don't forget the patches, I only found out about that from reading older posts on allnurses
