Hey, is there anyone who applied for Fall 2017 admission to LA County? Have you guys heard any news? has anyone called you? What are your thoughts?
I couldn't have written it better myself. I also took my prereqs at PCC and I believe the professors were top notch there. Many of them teach at local community colleges because they enjoy teaching. Those professors usually come from other "bigger" and more "prestigious" universities. What is with all the community college bashing? I took all my prerequisites at PCC and the professors were great. My Anatomy professor is a chiropractor with his own practice. The man's knowledge of the human body is beyond impressive. He took pride in his work and held his class to a higher standard. His lectures were very in depth and the exams were incredibly thorough. My physiology and microbiology professors were also outstanding. As a college student, you take away what you put into your education. YOU choose your own class schedule. YOU choose your professors, and there are resources which can guide you towards a great professor. For the science portion of the Teas, I watched some YouTube review videos and looked at some of my old notes. I took the Teas at County the morning after a 12 hr night shift and scored 85. Needless to say, coffee saved the day.
My point is that I felt very comfortable with my core science education that I took the exam with no sleep and didn't find it difficult at all. Community college can be wonderful if you are willing to put in the work and choose to optimize your schedule. I believe community college can be a great option for many. I would hate for anyone on here to read these posts for guidance and be misinformed.
On another note - my friend had Anatomy with the professor you speak of!
So get a 4.0 in everything and a 65 on the teas and you're all good? How come vnlaura's friend didnt get in? Well I'm just saying what she told me..She said they look at the teas harder than you think. We'll just have to wait and see..I'll be very suprised if vnlaura doesn't get in....
I know for a fact those were her grades because she made it into the ADN program at Rio Hondo. She is almost done with her first year. She did tell me her grade for the TEAS and it wasn't a 75%, she said it was 60 something, not even in the low 70's. I forget the exact number, but she did not get the 5 extra points, and no, she did not make it in at LAC. She had also applied at Rio and that's where she is at right now.
I am not saying ALL community colleges are the same, and I am not "bashing" all of them. I am speaking about ONE cc in particular and that is all. I too graduated from Rio Hondo Community College and I too had awesome professors with the exception of my Anatomy professor. My Microbiology professor has a PhD in Microbiology, and has been teaching the class for many years. Both of my Chemistry professors have PhD's in Chemistry, and one of them doesn't use power points or anything to the like. He's been teaching the class for so long, he already has the lecture memorized and writes everything out on the board. My Physio professor has a PhD in Molecular Biology. All of them were excellent lecturers and good listeners as well. I have nothing good to say about my Anatomy professor so I'll leave it as that. What I'm saying is: It doesn't make any sense for someone to have all A's in their prerequisites and science classes, and not being able to get at least a 75% in their TEAS.

Exactly so... I don't know how anyone could let such full-scale inflation slide.
Hello, fellow pre nursing students. As I read over your conversations I come the conclusion that my application is not as competitive as many of yours are. I meet the minimum requirements- including my tease exam score-- that allows me to apply to County and Pasadena for their RN programs. I'm currently retaking micro and physio since these two schools allow more than one repeat. In case I don't get in this application period, maybe my situation will be different when and if I apply in July. In about a month we will all receive notification of our acceptance status. Good luck to many of you-- though you guys probably don't need it. It would-- however-- be a priviallge to sit and be apart of this experience. #darkeyecirclesareabattlescares

AYYYYEEE PCC! :) You're absolutely correct. Many of my previous professors also taught at universities. They lecture here and there at local community colleges simply because they enjoy teaching. Ratemyprofessors.com is pretty on point when searching for a great professor.
I'm sure your friend enjoyed the Anatomy class as well then :). I took him over the summer so it was pretty intense. It felt like i was in shock and overwhelmed the entire time, but in a good way... if that makes sense lol.

That's good... Stay determined not impatient or discouraged if you don't get in. This world is full of absurdities. Don't be resigned or resentful to that. Instead just say, "that's life", and muddle your way through with frustration ....have fun fighting those absurdities.
Phew, I'm beat...Gonna go eat!
why does it matter if someone can get all A's in their classes and not do well on the test? maybe they're not great test takers with exams like that. i know im not, but i still work hard to earn a's and b's. what the teas was on except for the sci portion and some of the math, was pretty much bs, things you would most likely not use in nursing school.
my friend in county right now had a 3.6 in sci and a 3.1 overall, majority A's and B's with a 69.3 on her TEAS and she still got in. just saying

I too know of someone who graduated from there and had all C's and a very poor score in her TEAS. Her mother works for County and knows the right people in the college to get her daughter in with no problems whatsoever. There's always the ones who deserve to be there, and the ones who are just lucky.

Don't give up! You keep on trying! Even if you don't make it this time around, you try again next time. You will make it in eventually, you'll see. I am old and have to be more disciplined than most to retain information, and look at me, I am still here trying. If I can do it, you can too! Good luck to all of us.

Take it from a county student. They don't look at your TEAS to "weed " out applicants. What gets you in is your grades. You have A's and b's your chances are high. The pool of applicants is high. But your GPA is what matters to them. For this last semester there was over 300 or 400 applicants and only 50 made it .thats why they take so long to Send acceptance letters . The dean personally looks at your transcripts and she calls the shots, you either get in or not . COllege of the canyons looks at TEAS and if you didn't do well, no matter your GPA even if it's 4.0. Their point system cuts you off . Period . I think the way county does their selection is more fair. They can't base the potential of a student based on an exam. They look at the student as a whole academically because that guides them to see if you can handle the program. I think community colleges are great. I know RNs that graduated from community colleges and they are great nurses. I feel blessed to be part of county school , but we are also cheering for our nursing sisters and brothers from other programs. We don't look down on each other for where we come from , we all suffer the same struggle. Good luck to all of you. I was once there in your shoes waiting for an answer and now I'm about to finish my first semester. Feel blessed ,
